Nancy Boy: how much?

I just got some Nancy Boy cream in the mail. I'm wondering how much cream you guys use per shave. I had a sample of the replenishing a long time ago, and after I just did a test lather I'm remembering how thin this stuff is in terms of lather. Their website suggests using a dollop the size of a walnut! That's a lot of cream, especially considering the price, so I'm thinking of using it brushless to keep it around longer. Thanks in advance for any input

I don't think it takes much cream at all, just a couple of light swirls in the jar to get the tips of the brush "dirty" is all it takes for me.

Haven't used it in awhile, but Tim's right, this stuff lathers pretty well. Walnut sized seems like a lot. I don't recall using much more than I would of say TOBS.

I received my NB tub yesterday and used it for the first time today. There was cream on the inside of the lid from transit so I just loaded my brush directly from the lid. I'd guess there was no more than a thimble full, which proved to be plenty. BTW, nice cream. Loves water!

John, tell us more! Not at all??

I just decided to give the creams another try before responding (I have the Signature and Replenishing). I haven't used them in over two years... I forgot how good they smell!

Anyhow, I started with the Signature first and it was just like I remembered; it was like pushing cold cream around on my face with the brush. But then I decided to add more water to my brush and I swirled and swirled the wet brush on my face and lather started forming. Thick lather :w00t:.

Lesson: It pays to revisit products that didn't work for you in the past, especially if you were a n00b when you tried them and gave up!!

Thanks Bill and LinuxMintyFresh!

You're right. I was using way too much product

Swirl or almond scoop are fine just don't go by the instructions - you'll be wasting perfectly good shaving cream. With their shave cream you don't need all that much to produce lather for 3-4 passes. Enjoy, it's really good stuff.

The cream is meant to be used brushless and the instructions are written for that. It just happens to lather well too. You are using a lot more cream brushless than with a brush.

Alright, after adding a little bit more water I got a pretty decent lather out of this stuff with just an almond sized gob of cream. It's not the most voluminous lather, but that's just fine; it doesn't need to be to work very well.

My shave today consisted of:
Red-tip
Red IP
Thayer's Medicated Superhazel (pre shave) which really complimented the peppermint in NB well
Nancy Boy Signature cream and
Nancy Boy Replenishing aftershave

The results are :cornut:. Can't wait to do it again.

+1

I use it brushless and a little bit goes a long way. Although I like Proraso (used brushless) and MWF (with a brush of course) NB gives me the closest shave of all. I just put a little onto my fingertips as suggested on the jar. I remember a web snippet where a user spoke with the proprietor and he suggested brushless also.

Lathering is more fun....

I don't think a mountain of lather does anything for the quality of shave. I prefer a thin layer of rich butter-like cream. I seem to get just that from NB, Fitjar, Pacific Shaving Co. creams to name a few of these "artisan" creams.

NB is so dense and creamy, I would think a DE would get clogged up shaving through it when applied brushless, unless of course you wet your fingers as you work it in. Naaaah, using a brush is more fun.

Right, I often get then impression that some people place too much emphasis on the build of a products lather. Thick lather alone, a good shave does not make, hmmr hrrr hrr hrr.

Yeah, I'm wary when I read about "lather explosions". I've seen soaps that didn't make the greatest lather yet the shave was excellent and on the other hand I've got explosions of lather only to result in a poor shaves. Either a soap/cream works after 2 tries or it's out, I don't have the desire to mess around with water ratios, fix them with glycerin or combine them with other products when there are so many things out there that work just fine with my technique and what feels natural to me.

Nancy Boy is my favorite cream hands down. I have been face lathering Castle Forbes Lavender almost exclusively for the past month and recently went back to NB just for a change of pace. As much as I love CF, the change reminded me of why I am on my third tubs of both NB scents in three years and only about halfway through the CF after two years. The biggest difference is that I get a better CF lather when I build it directly on my face while NB works best for me when I bowl lather. Both are extremely tricky to get right at first and both are very thirsty. A little more water than you may be used to works for both creams but that's where all similarity ends. NB is the most moisturizing cream I have ever used, while CF will NEVER be accused of being moisturizing. CF leaves my face smooth and powdery, but NB is like being outdoors in warm rain.
Nancy Boy made my list of the ultimate shave kit if I were forced to choose one of each item to use for the rest of my life. I think it is that good.

I used NB again this morning and lightly brushed it across the cream a few times (less than an almond, how 'bout a pistachio! :tongue_sm) and it was still sufficient for 2+ passes. Doesn't take much at all. This is a nice product! Not only did I get a nice shave, my skin felt great, too. Those ingredients seem to really do their job. :thumbup1:

Maybe they mean a walnut that's been shelled?

Same question with the constant use of "almond-sized" amount......are people talking about a shelled almond or an almond still in its shell?

 In all cases, we better assume shelled, King. Otherwise a tub is good for what...30 almond shaves? 15 walnuts?
