n00b still in research

Welcome to B&B! My first DE razor was the Merkur HD, and honestly it is still my favorite razor. I've used some excellent vintage gillettes that give great shaves as well, but the Merkur is a good buy if you ask me. I think the attachment I have to the Merkur as being my first DE razor, plus the fact that it really is an excellent instrument, makes it my favorite.

Good luck on getting your initial kit together. You can go really cheap, or like a lot of us here, quickly develop several acquisition disorders!

My recommendation for a cheap kit would be:
-Van Der Hagen Glycerin Soap
-Tweezerman Pure Badger Brush
-Witch hazel and Aqua Velva (if you don't like alchohol based splash, go for Nivea
Sensitive Skin Aftershave Balm)

You should be able to get all of this for under $30, and it will last you a long time. Also, these are all very well performing products. Check around different places online (bullgoose shaving, westcoast shaving, classic shaving, etc). You can find find some of this stuff, or comparable low priced items and get started in the wonderful world of wet shaving.

Now, if you want to go for the nicer stuff, then just check around on the site here as there are more products available than I can mention.

As for the razor though, I'd say go with the Merkur HD. That's my pick.

Oh, and you'll need blades for the razor as well. Try a sample pack of blades to see what you like. I recommend Iridium, Astra, and Personna Red blades.

nmg82 thanks for the heads up.

also, HOLY CRAP! this is an active community!. I frequent car forums that are rather popular but damn....21 posts already? glad to be apart of the community. ill be purchasing my first kit tonight. :thumbup1:

im going to keep it simple though. ill get the razor, a sample pack of blades, glycerin soap , badger hair brush, aftershave, and a stand/soap bowl thing.

can someone tell me what shaving lather comes in a tube shown in the instructional videos ive seen on youtube by mantic59? look very convenient. id much rather that then a bar of soap.

thanks

Welcome to B&B!

Welcome to B&B! I started with the 34C and it was a great beginners razor IMHO.

Welcome to B&B! The HD 34C is a great razor, IMO.

I'm a big fan of the Merkur HD 34c. You'll get great shaves from it.

The Merkur is a fine razor.

Welcome to B&B. The merkur HD is a great razor, it might be the only razor you will ever need.

The HD is a fine razor to start with, a lot of folks here have chosen it as their first.

Need I say more?

I like Erasmic Shave cream myself. Truefitt & Hill has travel tubes of their creams, as well. The Lavender is nice, in my opinion, but that's the only T&H cream I've tried thus far. I'm sure the other guys will give several suggestions, as well.

Quite a few come in tubes. Taylor of Old Bond Street, Godrej, Geo F Trumpers, D.R. Harris, Musgo, Proraso all have good stuff in tubes.

For even LESS hassle (no caps) try out Kiss My Face creams in pump bottles. Good subtle scents, super easy to lather and it's pretty cheap.

Welcome to B&B! I have only been at this for about 2 months now so take my advice with that in mind.
I have only used a Fatboy so far and love it.
as for cream/soap i have used a lot. If you want to get some local most drug stores and wallmart sell Van der Hagen soap and it is good. if you want a cream I have found Kiss my Face at super markets. If you want to go online you can get great stuff for a good deal.
For blades i would get a sampler pack. lets you try out a good range of blades.
as for extras I use aqua velva or a alum block for after the shave.

hey folks im bumping this thread because i lost interest and time in continuing my research temporarily. being active military i shave everyday and im sick of throwing away money everytime i need blades (proglide)

I'd vouch for Bullgoose also! You can ask WCS or Phil at Bullgoose to help piece together a new kit for you, and order when you have the kit you want!

Personally I hated the Merkur 34. My recommendation for a beginner would be almost anything BUT...

An old Gillette Tech should be able to be purchased for about $10-$12 delivered off of BST, it's a great starter.
You can find a Schick Krona on ebay (or bst occasionally) for $10 or less, it's also a wonderful and often over-looked razor
My 3rd suggestion, if you are looking for new, my recommendation would be a Feather Popular razor. It's made from thermo plastic & chromed steel. Look "cheap" but the fit & finish are above many of the Merkur razors, and once you get your technique down, it makes a terrific travel razor, won't break/dent/bend if dropped and can give a great, close, comfortable shave.
