Mystery hones... Let's see what you have

My favorite was a sort of streaky mottled black, that had the highest absolute sharpness. If someone up there could reliably pull that out of the ground and it be in the ballpark of that one hone they could probably corner the modern production natural finisher market if the price weren't exorbitant. Purple gave the most balanced for me, green the smoothest. I had another really good black but not streaked that I traded to nelson years ago. Vt slate is really variable in hardness and consistency so what I say may not apply to everyone. All the hones I have were hand picked from material by the owner once I told him all the parameters I required for them to be good hones.

Have had this for a couple of weeks. Uk. Had a lot of flaking effect prior to lapping.

Hi, new to the forum. I picked this up recently and thought it could be a Thuringian, but it’s really sparkly. It’s 8x2x1 and it slurries like a slate, very dense and fine. I honed three razors on it, two of them passed hht tests but were uncomfortable shaves and one was the best shave I’ve had yet. Like a damn light saber. Any clue what it could be? I asked a friend and he suggested it was a yellow lake.

I partially lapped the bottom, but there are some rough spots that still remain.

"Look what I found"
I found this stone a while ago and thought it has a Hindostan and thru it in the pile with the others. But it never looked, felt, and smelled the same. It was harder and not as muddy as the others. When I noticed a posting of another Hindo, a saw Magog along with others mentioned.
Thought I would see what the consensus of the brain trust might be. It is a middle of the road stone, lapping was not to hard, not to soft. Grit feels to be in the 5K neighborhood. It a good looker at 8x2 and well used and dished. On thing also, when found, had no residue of oil. It is discolored but clean

"Look what I found"
The issue is hindostans are so variable in how they behave it makes things complicated.

I understand what you mean. In my stack, not any two look or behave the same. This one is different in feel, appearance and performance. Wishful thinking, everything should have a serial number and label. Either way, it’s a good looker

Picked this up from the flea market today. Laps like a slate, smells kind of like a Thuringian when lapped. It’s on the softer side of slates and slurries readily. Not as fine as any of my labeled Thuringians, and feels vaguely sandy when slurries. The color pattern is nice, kind of a gray/brown with some blue clouds. It had some label remnants (I think) on it as well. What do you guys think?

No, I remember that listing. California. It was a long time ago and I think rolled over 200. He had a few other really rustic looking ones direct mounted into wood not the same material

So here's some pics of that stone we're talking about since I think I failed to add any yet.

Were you #2? I remember at least 2, maybe 3 other bidders fighting me for it. I was hoping to snag a nice cheap interesting piece, and then everyone starting thinking it was a crazy Rouge du Salm, and suddenly I'm bidding more than it's worth to me because how dare they try to take my stone from me.

Honestly, one of my worst purchases. I literally never use the thing... it just sits there looking cool. I HATE the dimensions. Too small for a decent knife and too wide to use practically for a razor. Hell it may be a miracle hone if I figured it out, but I've not been willing to put the time in past, "eh, it's a pretty good oil stone... oh wait, I have a 12x3" freaking surgical black arkansas... welcome to my shelf".

"Look what I found"
A score from this morning not for its honing potential, but because of the name. A 2x4 single grit hone. Any relationship to Williams Shave Soap?

Good god, that looks like the poster child for barber hone breakdown.

Can't help you on the affiliation with Williams soap, but I sort of suspect unrelated.
