My turn to ask for brush advice

I just started shaving with a DE about a month ago, and there is no turning back for me now. Here are my answers to the questions in the sticky when asking for brush advice.

1. I have been using a VDH boar brush so far. I think I am getting a descent lather out of it, but I can't help but wonder what a better brush would add to my shaving experience.

2. I have been using the VDH soap as well and lathering in a mug so far. I did try a creme once and did like it, but I think I will be using soap 90% of the time.

3. I am not completely sure what all I want out of my next brush. I am leaning toward a boar, because I have seen a lot of people recommend this if you are using soaps. But, I also want to check out a badger to see how it compares to a boar.

4. Brush aesthetics...I think I am open to anything here.

5. Budget. I am not trying to spend a lot of money right now (buying a house) so I would like to stay around or below $30...I know this will knock out a lot of options.

6. No preference on size.

7. Here are a few brushes I have been looking at:
Boar-

Badger-

I have also looked at the Tweezerman since it has been mentioned on the forums a few times.

I am open to other options, but these are ones I have noticed.

8. And of course, this will be my last brush....ok...not really. Probably will be my main brush until I am ready to shell out some more cash to check out a good silvertip or something.

Tweezerman was my first badger brush and it is up to the task.
I also use some inexpensive boar brushes (i.e. Burma Shave) as well.
I rotate the brushes. Never 2 days in a row.

Good Luck,

John

For $30 I would personally want a quality boar brush over a cheap badger. I have a boar similar to your first choice and like it very much. For that amount you could also do a restoration of an older brush and get a better quality hair than you could buy in a completed brush. Good luck, and unfortunately no matter how much you like your new brush it doesn't cure the desire for more.

of the 3 you suggested I have the top model, it is very good with soaps and was highly recommended by the crew over at SMF shavemyface.com where there is quite a few into boar brushes. I suggest you watch "Zacks" you tube videos for getting the most out of your boar brush they can be found on you tube or over at SMF or TSD theshaveden.com

I decided to go ahead and get the boar. Should be here soon. And the black handle will match my black handle Super Speed. :001_smile And I will also have to give a look at Zacks videos. Thanks.
