What's new

My Red Tip Experience

I purchased a "minty" 1957 (C1) Gillette Super Speed Red Tip razor this past week, it arrived yesterday, and I shaved with it for the first time this morning. I loaded it with a new Israeli Personna Platinum Chrome blade and used the C.O. Bigelow shaving cream, my personal favorite.

I only own two other safety razors, an Edwin Jagger DE89L and a 1965 Gillette Super Speed Flair Tip, so I don't have a lot to compare it with, but I was very impressed with my Red Tip shaving experience. It gave me a smooth, close, and comfortable shave, and when I completed my usual 3-passes (WTG, XTG, ATG), I had the least amount of clean up ever. Bottom line: this 56 year old razor gave me my best DE shave to date!

I love this razor! :001_smile

It looks to be in AWESOME condition as well, so great find! Glad to hear you enjoyed the shave, I can't wait to buy a red-tip and shave with it! Thanks for the review.

Wow, that's a GREAT example of a Red tip there! It sounds like it's treating you right, too!:thumbup1:

Jeez, though, it's not THAT old (grumble grumble) I trun 57 in August!

Red Tips are excellent razors! I used mine this week too. Very, very nice shave. A word of caution though, this is the razor that started my quest to go aggressive! I figured if I can handle this then let's see what else is out there. Nice score!

Thanks, Wingnut, and no, 57 is definitely not old, particularly since I'll be 61 this year! :c1:

A 1955 Gillette Red tip was my second razor find in the wild. I snagged it for $7.50 plus tax. Unfortunately it is out of spec.s, and I have to retweak it to get it shave ready. Someone must have dropped it in its past life. Hopefully I'll shave with it someday. You've got an excellent example there troop! Glad to hear it shaves as good as it looks. Have a good night sir.

I had a beautiful Red Tip but I sold it. I found it was too close to my Fatboy. Couldn't see the need to keep both of them, and the Fatboy is one of my top razors, so the Red Tip had to go!

Congrats on the score. I hope you continue to enjoy the razor.

I have three of them. Oops gave one away. Ok Now I have two of them. Lol. Looking to get them all prettied up and repainted.
Don't forget to try the one with + + on either side of the base plate. Great shavers too!

Thanks, men!

rxonmymind: This one does have the 2 + signs on it, but I don't think they hold any special significance. They started adding the + signs in '57.

I've had and sold several red tip razors. I still have one but it is a rhodium replate I need to paint the red tip back onto. Shaves like a demon.

Don't think I will be without a red tip any time soon. They are too nice to use

It must be a beauty with its rhodium finish, turtle. Do you have a photo of it? I'd like to see it if you do.

Thanks!

They are great razors and I know what you mean as I am turning 55 this year. I was in an antique store looking around and saw toys for sale that I played with as a kid.

You know... I was looking quickly for a pic of it then realized I only had a SOTD pic not just one with the razor alone so just posted a response without a pic..

Fixed that now :001_smile

Wow! That IS a beauty! Get some red lacquer paint on the tip and it'll be perfect!

Thanks for posting it! :001_cool:

I had to wait for several years before I found a red-tip and still use it even though it's milder than my Mergress dialed in at 3 1/2.
