My "Poor Man's" Vintage Simpson Butterscotch Brush

This is an Erskine brush that I recently took delivery of with some strong "Simpson-esque" lines that I had never seen before. It is quite beefy with a height of 2-1/8" inches and a width of 1-3/8" inches. My intention was to re-knot it, but, despite what appeared to be soap scum on the handle, the hair looks to be unused -- so I may just keep it as it is.

I gave the handle a cleaning with warm, soapy water and a toothbrush followed by a polish with Meguiar's Plastx.

This thing is an absolute winner. I gave it a vigorous shampooing and then went to work in my scuttle with nary a shed hair. The knot is in excellent condition, and if it was ever used, it just doesn't show. It is not the densest knot, but it's not a flop-monster either, and it is much better than the other vintage brushes I have used. I made my usual lather of VDH Deluxe soap and KMF cream and I had a thick, creamy bowl full in no time. This brush kind of reminds me of the Vulfix 2235 with great "flow through" and fast lather building.

I have no idea what part of the badger the hair came from, but it feels very high quality with super soft and scritch-free tips.

Definitely a bargain for $20. :001_cool:

I really like that handle and it looks like the knot is in decent shape and should last a good while. Great job on cleaning it up, yet maintaining the aged look. This is something that I try to accomplish too with my butterscotch restorations, if I wanted a brush to look brand new I would just buy one from Rudy or one of our other fantastic artisans.

Big +1 The nicks and discoloration add to the character and charm. Having a usable vintage knot is a huge bonus. Usually, if there is any knot left in an old brush, it's a small diameter with a sparse amount of hair.
