What's new

My Old Spice Soap is not Old Spice soap.

A few months ago I won a small shaving lot on the bay, that included an Old Spice shaving mug. The seller had indicated that the mug contained a remnant of the original soap, but was nearly used up. Admittedly I won the lot for a great price, and was excited to get a shave with the Old Spice Shaving soap.

The soap was really funky, and had a thin layer of crud on it. After some rinsing, and scraping it was good to go. I couldn't make out any scent, so I figured it had disappeared like most vintage soaps do. I lathered it up and was amazed at the prodigious lather etc.

However, after several uses and some recently watched auctions of BNIB Old Spice pucks, there is no way my soap is Old Spice...the puck just doesn't fit the mug in the same way, and the bottom of the puck has a pronounced single ridge that makes me think that what I really have is a vintage Colgate puck. It still lathers great, but I'm disappointed now that I'll have to wait longer to acquire Old Spice SS. No harm, no foul though. Hopefully I'll win some Old Spice Shaving soap soon.

I've been wanting to get some, as I remember my Grandfather using it to shave with, and my Grandmother scolding me for Fooling around with Grandpa's shave mug and soap as a young kid. ( I believe I was imitating lather making).

Anyway, B&B continues to educate, enlighten, and entertain...

I used Old Spice soap for decades. It really was an excellent soap. I used up my last puck years ago before I even knew it was vintage and worth a fortune.

I don't think I would spend the dollars asked for old pucks now...but it really was a soap that one could use for decades with joy.

I have found Cella to lather very much like OS....not a great scent but lather quality really reminded me of my old Old Spice soap.

I, too, purchased my OS mug with a soap puck in it. Mine wasn't being sold as an OS soap, but I was hoping it was. When I got home with it, I soaked it a bit to clean it up and during the cleaning I could tell it wasn't OS because there was basically no scent at all to it. I just chucked it in the garbage. Oh well, I still got an OS mug for a good price, so it wasn't all that bad.

I guess I'm pretty lucky to have a nice NOS puck and mug! :thumbup1: Doesn't smell too strong any more but it's definitely Old Spice. Works great. :001_smile

Most of the OS soaps that I've come across have lost all scent except for a sort of soapy smell. They can yellow with age, but the good soap is a kind of oatmeal white color. It should lather up well and feel tallowy.

The NOS pucks will have a "ship and stars" imprinted on the top, but once that's gone there's nothing on the bottom to check for...although if there are any markings on the bottom, you'd know it wasn't OS soap.

Old spice is a pinkish peachy color, has a deep depression in the center and fills the mug (diameter-wise). So it's not too hard to ID.
