What's new

My newest Addition to my stable

I know it is a little different, but this latest acquisition is directly nib enabled! I was going to add a pic to the acquisitions thread, but I felt this one was worthy of its own thread :D

I have hunted for a decent slope-front style desk since I became serious about writing again and I finally found one last Saturday. I really wanted to find my Grandmother's desk, but an uncle took it when her estate was broken up and I'll never see it again, so this will have to do.

The condition is very good for a piece of used furniture, a few touch ups and it will be good as new to me. After the external appearance the hinge arrangement caught my attention. Most of these types of desks I've encountered have droopy desk top syndrome, where the hinges or chains are at a straight line from the sides to the desktop and as you can see this one has a piano style hinge that is very sturdy. This one also has the lockable, pull out work drawer that doubles as a bottom support for the desktop. I found a little surprise in the back of the right-hand shelf drawer, a used Rogers' Perfect Pen dip nib was hiding in the back.

I've included a few pics before I loaded it up and a few after. I need to find a few of those pen trays for the drawers to keep my desk pens from rolling around. I noticed that I really can tell I'm left-handed by the way I arranged everything. I think I'm going to pick up a green shaded bankers lamp to the top and a small desk clock if I can find a nice one. I will add that my laptop looks out of place sitting on top of this bad boy

Okay too much talking and here are the pics, I just finished my home work for the week and I need to catch up on a few letters to friends.

I hope you all enjoy

Very nice and is that called a Secretary desk? They come with and without the top glassed doored bookcase. The best part is that when you need to the desk portion can be closed without disturbing your work for the most part and the pidgeon holes can be stuffed with everything from bank statements to small cameras.

Nice!!

I'm going to try and keep this desk in good order and not stuff random junk in each pigeon hole and drawer...I'm not sure I can resist it though.

Very cool looking desk! Where did you find it? Anitque shop? Estate sale?

Cheers,

M.

I managed to find this at a smallish antique store that I drive by everyday. I rarely stop in there because they never seem to have any razors or pens other than a $100 Red Tip and $50 Duram Duplex straights. I walked in on Saturday and saw it, checked it out pretty well and sent some pics to my wife who requested she see it first before I buy it. So Sunday morning I was back and after her inspection she was sold.

So far I really like the desk, it's very convenient. The #10 envelopes for 8.5 x 11 paper had to come out of their holes, they stuck out too far to really shut the desk up. I have plenty of monarch size envelopes so they stayed there and I trimmed some of my stationery to monarch (7.25 x 10.5) and it fits perfectly in the loose leaf shelf and in the holes. That size must have been more common back in the day.
