My New (Old) John Barber

I recently scored a John Barber. Could use some TLC and some scales, but overall not too bad for its age. Speaking of which, I know John Barber's were made from 1810-1830ish, does anyone have any more definitive dates?

The reverse side says "Patent Tempered Steel" if that helps

Very nice Nick. I would say those dates are about as close as you'll get. I would say though it is closer to 1810 judging by the stub tail.

Thanks guys for the compliments!

I've shaved with a few old W&Bs, and a Greaves true wedge thats a nightmare to hone, but never a stub tail like this

Any more information on the maker or guess as to the age would be appreciated!

John Barber was in business from 1810 until 1834. The tail shape didn't really change between 1810 and 1835 for most makers so there's no way to date it more accurately than that I'm afraid.

Thanks for the info John. So the maker stamp and "Patent Tempered Steel" doesn't help at all?

nice score - I've got 4 John Barbers that are in different stages of restoration. I am doing the work by hand sanding so not to loose any of the great curves on the blades. One of my favorite manufacturers.
