What's new

My journey

I’m very excited to be transitioning to ‘traditional’ shaving, after using cartridges and Gillette Foamy for as long as I can remember. Not that I needed a better shave... I’ve had no problems with ingrown hairs or irritation with the Mach 3. It’s the tradition and experience that’s attracted me, the creams and soaps, the fragrances, and whipping up of a nice lather... and of course the camaraderie of forums such as this. I purchased a beautiful Mühle synthetic brush and learned how to lather with the AOS Sandlewood cream. Others are on order, including some I won on a PIF. Thank you!

My first non-cart razor was the Supply V2 injector razor. Great shave, not without some irritation but still great! That SE blade would mow my thick whiskers like they never existed. A few nicks early on, but I think I got the hang of the technique. The razor itself though was uncomfortable to hold. It’s very top heavy and slippery, and after spending time on this forum, and the fear of missing out on experimenting with various other blades, I elected to give DE shaving a try. After some research, I bought both the Alpha Outlaw (mild), the iKon V3 slant, and a few test blades.

The Outlaw with the Bravo handle is just a gorgeous piece of hardware. I was a little surprised by the amount of blade exposure, but was eager to give it a try. With the Astra blade and 3 passes, I did achieve a DFS, but with a lot more irritation in the neck area than I’m used to. An aftershave containing witch hazel and aloe that I had ordered from Supply really helped, and I used Nivea balm for good measure. The second day using the same Astra blade was even worse, with stinging even on my cheeks, which never happened with a Mach 3. Disappointing, to say the least. I’ve put this razor away for now, not quite sure what to do with it? Try again with a different blade? For now, I’ve moved on to the iKon slant.

I first used the slant with two days worth of growth. The shave was smooth with a new Astra blade and I was content. They next day, however, I experienced the same irritation as with the Outlaw. Suffice it to say I am no fan of the Astra blade. So today, I swapped the blade for a Rapira Swedish Supersteel. I don’t know if I had the angle figured out but there was a lot of tugging, more so than the Astra. I tried different techniques including a very light touch and ‘riding the cap’. After a WTG and XTG pass, there was a ton of residual stubble! It is said that the iKon is a mild razor, and I believe it! After the irritation of the last few days, I didn’t want to risk it and I took out my Mach 3 for a comfortable ATG BBS finish.

My journey so far with daily shaving using DE razors hasn’t been fun. I’m embarrassed to say the Mach 3 works better for me. YMMV. My preshave routine has remained the same, morning hot shower, lather with the AOS cream, various aftershaves and balms. I can’t blame the preshave, but perhaps preshave creams or soaps (the PAA cube comes to mind) might help. I also can’t wait to try other shave creams and soaps. I have a Tabac stick in transit.

Tomorrow, I will use the iKon with a Feather blade and will report back. If that doesn’t go well, I may look again into SE razors, with perhaps the Vector or OneBlade.

Thanks for reading.

You must be a McGill alum? Me too. I also have learned that safety razor training takes time and is a developed skill, especially compared to Mach 3 shaving. Have fun and have patience!

Yes, graduated class of 97! Nice to see another McGill grad here.

Not giving up... I wish there was a way to try different razors without the upfront purchase cost. A rental program of sorts, I think, might well succeed.

Couldn’t resist... I ordered the Blackland Vector, with a few sample blades from tryablade.com. I’ll keep playing with the iKon and various blade configurations until the Vector arrives.

Wow, what a difference a blade makes! No tugging at all with the Feather / iKon combo. I was hesitant, applied zero pressure, and as a consequence missed a few spots in the neck area, cleaned up with the Mach 3. More importantly, no cuts/nicks! Nivea post shave Balm. Feels good. DFS.

Mail call today with a bunch of goodies. Next shave is bound to be interesting!

My best advice. Try everything that interests you. Go slow, and when you think you have things slowed down, try to go a little slower. Buy Sell Trade a good resource both ways.

Mail call!

It’s been a shave free weekend. I’ll have three-days worth of growth to mow down on Monday, with plenty or creams/soaps to pick from... I’m leaning on TOBS St Jermyn that’s supposed to arrive by tonight. There’s also the option of Proraso Blue or Cella All’Aloe Vera. Over the coming week, I’ll have several other new options, including a few sticks! Face lathering, assuming I get the hang of it, may prove time saving.

Rabbit holes are about fun and exploration. Enjoy!

The TOBS St Jermyn shave “cream” arrived last night.... rich & luxurious scent. I prefer it to the AOS Sandlewood. Is it really a cream though? To this newbie, it felt harder than a cream; perhaps somewhere in between? Not knowing how it performs, I didn’t load enough on my brush this morning, which short changed my third pass... otherwise good shave. The X3 slant and Feather blade performed admirably.

Amazon delivered the PdP No. 63 today. I’m also waiting on the Zangari Magician and a B&M Leviathin. Oh, and I made my first purchase from the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. Parlez-vous français?

Zingari Man, sego/tallow based soap, with great reviews. Opened the lid to find this presentation: eww, 0/5

The orange blossom/citrus scent overpowers anything else. Not bad, not my favorite. 3/5

I used it to face lather, a first for me. I think I did OK? The lather was thick and smooth. 5/5.

I used a new PolSilver blade with the iKon today. Definitely not as sharp and smooth as the Feather. 3/5.

Overall good experience. The soap is great and will be used in rotation, but in terms of scent, I’d rank TOBS St Jermyn > AOS Sandalwood > Zingari Man Magician.

It was Proraso Blue’s turn today. Both the pre-shave and the shave cream itself have a cooling, fresh, menthol feeling, even though they’re labeled as protecting and hydrating. I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it either. The lather quality was fine, thick, but not better than Zingari. I used a Bic Chrome Platinum blade today. The blade was great, and maybe as sharp as the Feather, but it’s supposed to get even sharper, so let’s wait and see. What I liked most about this blade is the wrapping. No damn wax!

Multiple firsts today: shave stick, Tabac, the Vector, and an Artist Club blade, specifically the Feather Proguard.

The concept of a shave stick is interesting; it definitely makes sense for travel, but for daily use? Seems a little Neanderthal... I’m undecided.

The venerable Tabac soap scent is neither luxurious (TOBS, AOS Sandalwood), citrusy (Zingari Magician), nor fresh (Proraso). There’s a very slight hint of tobacco, which should have offended my cardiologist olfactory nerve endings, but it didn’t. I can tolerate it and I might even get used to it. After wetting both the face and the stick, I painted my face ATG until I got a fair bit of the soap on my whiskers. I started brushing and added water to the brush until I thought I had a decent lather. However, I obviously didn’t, because my razor/blade got clogged with thick paste and I had a helluva time getting it off. Note to self: more water, and even when you think you’re done, add more water!

Now for the Vector. Wow, just wow! You DE shavers don’t know what you’re missing. It’s incredibly maneuverable, covers much real estate, and gets under my big nose like no other razor, not even the Mach 3. I’m sold; definitely my new go to hardware.

As for the ProGuard... expensive and defeats the purpose of a Feather blade, which is meant to be sharp. While the shave was irritation free, I’m looking forward to trying a sharper blade. Tomorrow, I’ll use the Schick Proline P-30 blade with the TOBS St Jermyn soap. God I miss that scent...

The Leviathan: received it, opened the lid, took a whiff, and closed it as fast as I could. The merchant would not accept a return because I had opened the lid, even though it had no seal. Is that common practice? Anyway, sold it on Reddit. Good riddance.

I was in a rush this morning. No pics today.
Proraso Red cream (Sandalwood), Vector + Proline P-30, XTG and ATG. Quick, efficient, excellent shave. Nivea shave balm, even though zero irritation.
I have found my island razor / blade combo. I just now need to settle on an island soap.

Having settled on my island razor and blade (no one will convince me I’ll get a better shave experience than with the Vector & Schick Proline combo), I’ve started exploring brushes and the art of lathering. My goal is whip up a lather worthy of a post on the ‘lather porn’ thread. [emoji854]

So far, I’ve tried several soaps using my Mühle Vivo synthetic brush in both a mug and the Captain Choice bowl. I think the quality of the lather is good, but I can’t seem to get enough of it to collect on the tip of the brush. Instead, it gets soaked up inside the bristles. What am I doing wrong? Is it the brush?

Great experience today. The Vector with the Schick Proline blade continues to provide smooth, effortless shaves. The PdP lives up to expectation; great lather and fantastic scent, dare I say maybe better than TOBS St Jermyn. I like it so much I’ll buy their aftershave products.
