What's new

My Guess... 3017

I'm about 5 shaves into the new puck of Ogallala Bay Rum. So far, I like the scent well enough (not one of those in your face bay rums like CO Bigelow Bay Rum ASB), but the performance is kind of meh. 40 second loading wasn't really doing it as far as lathering goes, so I'm up to a minute and getting enough reasonable lather. Cushion isn't great, and neither is the slickness. I take heart that this is not a triple milled soap so I should be able to make relatively short work of it.

I'm also in what will probably be my last week of a bottle of DR Harris Pink (100 ml) that I got for Christmas last year. Almost daily use for 9 full months. It's not cheap, but is effective for someone who likes the feel of a balm (no sting) with the application of a splash. I don't think I'll replace it.

Finished off two sticks of Arko today, that I had grated up together in a small plastic round container with a lid several years ago. Next 3017 project will be the last of a L'Occitane Cade puck. That triple milled soap is pretty hard so may take a minute or two.

That’s a solid kill Okie. Nice job. Those Arko sticks can be stubborn.

I’m still wandering in a wasteland of product trying to decide what to 3017 next.

On a side note, I was in Chicago for a few days for business. The first afternoon I had 5 minutes to kill waiting for a ride so I ducked into Merz and snagged a tube of GFT Limes. I don’t recall the last time I used a GFT cream...maybe 10 or more years. I had a chance to use it a few times and Im glad to find that GFT still makes a wonderful cream. The Limes scent is light, but interesting. The performance just great. Post shave, as with many creams, is not on par with a top tier soap, but the overall experience was exceptional.

Been attempting a try at minimalism myself. I have a couple of tubes of KMF cream laying around, but I won't be 3017'ing them. I will just use them every great once in awhile if I get bored using only 4 seasonal soaps.

My Through The Fire Fine Craft, Pink Grapefruit soap is now done!

Approximately 9 1/2 weeks with a soap that I had been very much looking forward to using (love the scent!) and I am now glad that this leg of my 3017 journey is over. No matter how I tried with whatever kind of brush, I simply could not get a lather that was sustainable for my 2nd pass. The closest I came was with my Yaqi Sagrada synth; the 2nd pass lather was serviceable but not great.

VERDICT: Pass

Since I have used two substandard soaps in a row, I went through my den to pick out my "non-desireable" stuff. I probably have 6 months more of being in "use up this yucky stuff" mode before moving on to good soaps.

Up next: Travel sized Dove gel (gift from a niece a few years ago). I figure this should be around two weeks.

Seasonably cool damp weather has settled into the region. I was going to drop a puck of Haslinger Sandalwood tallow formula into an Old Spice mug on Oct 1 for my next victim. “Was” being the key word in that sentence.

A gentleman that lurks here but is active on another forum dropped me a PM that my next 3017 effort is being delivered today. We’ve exchanged a few PIFs this year of products the other hasn’t tried.

Hmmm. I know he likes a few of the highly rated artisans offerings and I’ve seen him comment that Tabac is his gold standard.

A few weeks back I mentioned 3017ing a stick of Tabac, except I don’t have any in the stash. I’m putting my money on that horse, but I guess I’ll know for certain later today.

To my lurking friend in Canada...thank you Sir. One of these days I’ll convince you to set your rotation aside and join us here in the 3017 realm.

Bob, has the Ogallala improved this week?

Yeah. It's fine. I have to load more than usual (certainly more than the TOBS and Harris I finished this year), which is surprising given that Ogallala is a softer soap than either of those triple milled soaps. The lather looks and feels dry (lacking that glistening appearance that always yells 'Slick!' to me), but it gets the job done. Let me put it this way. I'm not hating the shaves.

Nice work, Sam.

Probably because with a softer/wetter soap you need more product to get the same amount of soap solids

CB glacé Herbe is in the home stretch. Daily use has really softened this soap and the last few weeks it’s been vanishing a lot faster than when I started. I brought it with me on a trip to Hawaii where it will meet its end. it’s been my go to menthol chill during this summer and since Hawaii is hot it just seemed fitting to finish it off doing what it does best.

Well, my gift arrived today from my friend to the north. I held off shaving this AM in anticipation of trying this new product so I was running on about 36 hours growth. I tried it and after a couple hours realized that I am likely going to be eating a man sized helping of crow very soon. You see, more than once on this esteemed forum of shaving experts I have poked fun at the newer artisan soaps on the market for loading them so heavily with every oil, cream, and butter known to man. Ingredients lists so long they scarcely fit on the label. I stood my ground proudly proclaiming that the old formula triple-milled soaps are best.

While I'm only one shave in, if I had to describe my experience in one word I would have to humbly admit to being quite stunned. The first lather/shave performance exceeds any product I've tried in over 4 decades of shaving.

My next 3017 effort is now on the clock.

Sixteen days after putting the small Haslinger puck remnant in the bottom of a small jelly jar, it looks about the same size. It is crazy how little soap needs to be loaded for two passes and touchups.
