What's new

my first post, and my experience with DE

I first decided to switch to DE's because cartridges are way too expensive for the typical 20 something like myself. It makes daily shaving an expensive habit, and the old mach 3 was not cutting it anymore anyway. i had been shaving regularly for 6 months, which had left my face with infected ingrowns and such, and my friends laughed calling it the "face herps". a year later i still have scars.

So i orderd a murkur 25 or 30 or soemthing and 20 feather razorblades on a whim after finding this site one day. They came with 5 free blue birds as well.

Originally i used up all the canned go that i had before ordereing soap. The first shave was with a feather blade and gillette cream. i did one down pass and stopped. i still had some stubble, well alot of stuble. but it was still pretty good compared to one pass with a mach 3.

i worked my way through the feather blades (i still have abour 10 left) but kept going back to the bluebirds. The feathers were a love hate thing. once in a while they gave me a perfect shave, however daily use left my face looking knicked and hacked up by the end of the week. The bluebirds were much more comfortable, so after i ran out of the 5 pack and couldt take another shave with the featehrs i ordered 100 pack a bluebirds for around 15 dollars shipped.

Rewind a bit, to when i ran out of goo...

--actually i lied, i gave a can and a half and 3 mach 3 blades to my girlfriend since she is broke and in college as well. and i only benefit from her having waht she needs to have smooth body parts, right?

allright, moving on. I ordered a Col Conk brush and a bowl of Tabac. Wow, huge difference! My skin still looks rough, my girlfriend says "rugged" because she's good with the euphanisms, to which i reply she looks "thick" haha. but the improvement is drastic

still however, the against the grain pass that is needed for a smooth shave is still a risky move, and i usually opt for a down and a across and a touch up, and whatever is left if just have to live with.

oh and i absolutey love to follow up with Aramis after shave. or sometimes some afta if i dont want so much scent, or nivea balm for the winter. on days when it's not important to look my best, i'l skip the shave which helps. i also use a non Polyethylne based scrub called apricot scrub a few times a week which has crushed up shell powder. the generic stuff is llike 3 dollars at cvs. at one point i was actually popping the little polyethylne blue beads out of my acne days later with my old scrub.

so making these small changes the past 6 months has helped. and the cost of shaving is so cheap its not even funny. the tabac hasnt gotten any smaller after months of use. it has actually swelled and is bigger than when i bought it lol.

i tend to run a little on the grundge side, so i doubt i'l be as big into grooming as much as some here. i keep my routine simple and minimal. alot of days i dont do jack. i think the best form of grooming is lifting weights and running.

anyways just wanted to say thanks for the help. my girlfriend would thank you guys too. i originally signed after months of lurking because of brians post with free crystal blades for new members and much to my dismay the contest was over lol. oh well, now that i have an account i guess im hooked

Glad to have you on B&B. We hope you feel comfortable asking questions and offering advice, and wish you the best in all your shaving adventures.

Welcome, it's nice to have you among us. I, too, switched primarily for the cost factor, it was just ridiculous. Even if one gets a shave "only as good as" the Mach 3's, etc, which, frankly, seems impossible, I would much rather do it with an 18-cent blade than a $3 one.

And, as others have said, it only gets better so enjoy!!

Welcome!! It's a pleasure to meet you!

Some folks around here say their Tabac is lasting so long they are adding it to their wills! ) It forms an air pocket and swells. If you're having trouble with the lid not seating properly, just prsss down on the soap. Enjoy your shaves!

once every couple of weeks, i just smoosh it down and pack it in like playdough, and it swells up to the top again. its like never ending soap.

side note, its amazing how well the mach 3 worked when i had peach fuzz i think thats why they send em out to you when youre young.

Do please comment as you get further into the Bluebirds, won't you? I'm wondering about them. They're "mysterious". "Made In Europe"? Huh? I heard they're made in the U.A.E. actually. Anyway, I want to know if their quality control is up to par before I mess with them, and I don't care who makes them or where. Keep us posted, OK?

And ask away! We have wizards posting here. And I do not impress easily; people here know and they're willing to share; so am I. Welcome!
