My first Microtome

I had my first shave with my new Microtome purchased here on the BST! I have to say the heavy grinds really agree with me! It was a great shave!!!

Is it the Carl Melcher I had? If so it sure honed up dang sharp. I saved some photos of how I had to set it up to hone it in case you need them in the future.

The sentiment used to be that microtomes were unhonable to shave ready standards. Obviously it was incorrect ;).

Nothing complicated at all. I'm a basic kinda guy. The wife will have to give me the memory card tomorrow with the photos(shared camera). The backside of the blade of this Melcher microtome wasn't completely flat like most others, it was very slightly rounded. When I layed it flat on the hone and drew it to me and flipped it over there were hone marks mid blade, not on the spine and edge, but mid blade. I just simply taped the back side of the blade down past the hone marks and honed accordingly. No tape on front of blade. I also stropped it with the tape on.

The Torrey microtome I had was actually slightly hollow on the back side of the blade, not flat like normal microtomes and I was able to hone it like any other straight. It was wicked sharp also. I noticed that the steel seemed a bit harder on both of the microtomes as well as a couple of other microtomes I've had than the steel on standard straights. There's one more in my work pile waiting on scales and honing, but will have to wait a bit.

HLS/Jim,
You honed the bejesus out of that thing! Thank you VERY much! I do believe it is my new favorite razor!

The brand is Carl Melcher.
