What's new

My First Duel with The BEAST (yes, another R41 thread)

My R41 head came in the mail today! Been anticipating its arrival and have put off shaving for 3 days now waiting for it to come, as I wanted to have a face full of manly stubble when we first went toe-to-toe. I must say, that was a shaving experience like no other. Showered, some MRGLO, a cold water splash and a brush full of Martin de Candre were my tools for this first time experience. Attached the R41 head to my AS-D1 handle (the ultimate Frakenrazor) and popped in a new Feather blade. That's right folks, go big or go home. No mild Derbys here.

Those first couple strokes were eye opening. I have never felt so much bare blade against my skin! Having used the AS-D1 for awhile though I knew to start off at a very flat angle. This thing will cut held almost to perpendicular! Don't let that scare you though, as the cut was nice and smooth (and loud!). I was shocked at how much hair was coming off in the first pass of 3 days growth. Pay attention to what you are doing, short straight strokes, and it works great.

After the one WTG pass I had what could be considered an acceptable shave. Second pass left me with a DFS and a small weeper on the chin where my XTG stroke mowed over the small bump left from a pimple. I could have stopped there . . . but I got greedy. No mere DFS would suit my needs after waiting 3 days and missing 3 morning rituals for this! So a 3rd pass cleanup XTG/ATG commenced.

After two fantastic and smooth passes wondering what all the fuss was about I went in cocky and ran it like a boss along the neck and jawline again, as well as the upper lip. I have to admit, the upper lip and chin got a little choppy, as there is so much blade exposed, so I did very light semi-ATG/sorta-XTG buffs in those areas instead. BAM! BSS and no damage! At least until I stopped splashing water on my face for a minute and looked in the mirror to see a bunch of micro nicks along my neck that weren't there a minute ago. Hmm, maybe the first time decision to go ATG down there was a little greedy, but the alum bar quickly put an end to those with some wicked strong yet soothing burn.
A splash of the OSAGE was next, the menthol so intense after such a shave that my eyes watered a bit. Sooooo goooood :velva2:

After that dried down a spash of DRH Windsor went on nice and cold to finish off. Slapped a pinch of TP on the weeper still going on my chin and called it a success! While shaving with the AS-D1 helped prepare me for the extreme angle required by this razor, it is still a complete different experience, but not one that should be feared. I can't wait to give this guy a few more spins and improve my technique with it.

R41 with AS-D1 handle = BLASPHEMY!

Just kidding - it is an unusual combination though.

You will find the R41 is not as beastly as rumoured - it just needs a little respect :001_unsur.

It is no more difficult to use than a shavette or straight razor.

Using similar technique to what you would with a straight (lot of stretching of your skin) and you will get exceptional shaves

Nicely done!

However, I think I will play it safe and stick with my AS-D1! My few shaves with an R41 Grande were quite red...

I know, right? It felt like the meeting of light and dark, Yin and Yang. I think I'll officially call it the R4-D1 (with a tip of the hat to my favorite little droid).

Yup, definitly got cocky on that 3rd pass. Next attempt will be paired with my Weber Bulldog handle. I'll probably swap back and forth with the AS-D1 handle a bit to see which I like it better with.

Hmm, I did not do that. I still approached the technique (other than angle) as I would with any of my other DE razors. I will definitly pay more attention to that next time, thanks.

Congrats! I have been using mine for almost three weeks now and I think your choice for a Feather blade isn't a bad choice at all. I started with a mild blade but that doesn't work at all; because of all the resistance a too mild blade will start 'vibrating', making it very hard to control the shave. It took me 6 shaves before I really cut myself; I had become too relaxed with the R41 and then it bit hard on the jaw-line. The first time in over 20 years of DE I needed the alum block. Didn't shave for almost a week to let it heal and was rewarded yesterday with my best R41 shave yet!

Amazing apparatus, that R41!!

Yea, it's damn efficient. I love my AS-D1 for how smooth it is. ATG buffing all day like it's nobody's business with that guy. But there's another side of me that craves that more agressive shave as well, but still smooth. I think the R41 will be the answer for those mornings once I get my technique down.

But maybe the answer is a combo of both! R41 for the efficient 2 pass WTG/XTG, nice and smooth, followed by cleanup ATG and buffing with the AS-D1.

Anyway, how frequently do you use yours? It it an every day shaver for you? Most claim it's not, and I can see why.

I have exercised great caution and vigilance with my R41-Weber Classic handle combination - and thus far have not had any hemorrhagic emergencies.

Interestingly, my most significant cut so far since entering the world of DE shaving ... with the Tradere SB ironically! The damn razor was so benign compared to my OC razors that I got complacent and 'slapped' the head against my chin on the 3rd pass ... creating a 1cm slash cut ... stupid, stupid, stupid. It has healed thankfully with no scar to remind me of my foolishness.

For now it is, well for every other day as I don't shave daily. I want to let it sit at the sink for the near future, just to get to know it. It is just when I pair it with a blade that doesn't really work I switch that blade into another razor and finish it before I go on with my R41.

I doubt it will become my every day razor though once I know it. I love an aggressive razor from time to time (like my Fatip) but for a daily razor I prefer a more easygoing one. Razors like the EJ Chatsworth, R89, Gladweg or Lord LP1822 aka L6.
