My First Attempt at Making Scales

Hi all. I'm new to the B&B, but I have been lurking here for a while. I just started using straight razors back in June, and have since came down with a really bad affliction of RAD. I've always enjoyed little projects and recently decided to make some scales for a friend's razor and one of my own. Here are a few pics:

The scales are made of mahogany and are finished with some boiled linseed oil. The W&B is mine and the one from Pepperell, MA is my friends. He did the pinning since I do not yet own a ball peen hammer (a trip to harbor freight is in the near future). I prefer a little patina so I didn't do too much restoration on the blade itself. I'm looking forward to making some more scales. I like natural materials so I will be sticking with wood, bone and horn. I would really like to try some ebony or macadamia wood next. I will probably do a CA finish on the next ones. However, me and my friend are into rifles so we kind of went with a gunstock finish on these. It was a learning experience, and I know my next batch will turn out even better!

You can get a Jewelers hammer at harbor freight for about $5. The smallest ball peen hammer they have is 8 ounces. They also have a package of 10 one-ounce tubes of ca for about $2. I also got a set of diamond needle files and flush cutters each for about $3 that I use for pinning.

Amazon and ebay have relatively inexpensive ball pein hammers. 4 oz is nice.

Nice job on the scales, they look great!

A tablespoon makes a nice pinning hammer. For more weight, stick a small wad of epoxy putty in the bowl of the spoon.
