My dog might lose his eye

My dog (a 9 year old Chihuahua) was fine 3 days ago and suddenly his right eye clouded up yesterday. After 2 visits to 2 different vets, they think that he has a lens luxation and now we need to see a dog ophthalmologist- the closest one being in ABQ, NM and will not be in El Paso until Feb 12. Good chance that he will need to have his eye removed. I'm not a big drinker but I'm hitting the Jameson and Ginger Ale to keep from breaking down.

We had the same situation with our Labrador when she was 10 and had the eye removed. She lived for four more years and had no further problems getting along fine with one eye, a loving family, and a great nose. Good luck and it may save your dogs life for many more delightful years. One thing more, it did not affect our dogs appetite at all.

Sorry to hear you little guy is having trouble. My dogs are much my kids as the real ones. He's still young by chihuahua standards and if he's anything like mine he's a fearless 200 lb dog in a 5 lb package. Good luck, hope all goes well.

don't worry about it man, yes its sad. But when you know both of you will pull through, its a bump in the road. as long as the pup can still see and act normal, F it; keep on truckin!

take comfort in that your dog will still be alive. It could have been far worse. now is the time put your own feelings aside and concentrate on what's best for your pet.

We recently adopted a 12 year old one eyed pug. She does just fine, except for the occasion when something approaches her blind side. We also have adopted a 9 year old french bulldog that someone had thrown a caustic chemical in his face years prior. One of his eyes seems to have erupted and is total scar tissue and is completely visionless, and his other eye is about 70 percent scar tissue. He really only notices motion.

Both dogs live in our house with too many buddies, including our bullmastiff who doesn't worry about where he steps. The little guys do just fine, even with their sight limitations, and I am sure your dog will too.

as a dog owner I can tell you that it is only the owner that has a hangup with the pet losing an eye/limb etc (speaking from experience here). the pet will continue on and adapt as if nothing has happened. be kind to your friend and get the medical treatment he deserves for all his years of loyalty - you will be glad you did it! bet of luck!!!

Thank you everyone, I've managed to calm down a bit. To say that the last 2 years have been rough would be an understatement- we had to pull life support on my father, put down my cat after he was hit by a car, had someone I never met before show up to my front door and try to kill me, and some more weirdness. So, hard to suddenly have this happen. My normal vet can be a little overly dramatic as well and she says he has a heart murmur which would be bad if he needed to be operated on. We have an appt with an eye doc in ABQ next week so we'll see what is really going on then. I've had a lot going on with work and both of my cars choose the same time to stop working too. So, a lot of things to deal with at once. My dog is actually acting like nothing is wrong- he is eating, drinking, going to the bathroom ok. The vet was saying that the glaucoma was really painful and he was probably in pain but he doesn't show it at all. He has hurt muscles before and he is really, really obvious when he is in pain. If I didn't look in his eyes, I honestly wouldn't think anything was the matter. I sincerely appreciate the well wishes though.

animals don't show pain the way humans do. I lost a dog to cancer about 4 years ago and he showed no signs of pain. he was an older dog and had slowed down a bit over the years. we had him x-rayed and his lungs were full of metastesis, it brought me to tears that I didn't realise he must have been in so much pain for so long. he never came home with us.

you've had a rough time, I hope that things turn around for you.

You are in a bad place I know. I had a Dobie who lost an eye at 5 years. He got along better than I would have. It doesn't make it any easier on you to hear these stories, but those of us who have been there know it will work out for you both.

One of our dachshunds is blind now in both eyes, she is managing very well. We have put a ramp down the deck, so she can get up and down without a problem, before that the fell a few times down the steps. She bumps from time to time into furniture, but she walks now quite careful throughout the house, before she was running.
Good luck with your dog!

my sincere condolences to the situation you are in. Nothing on this earth could keep me from breaking down. I love my furry kiddos more than any human.

Wishing for a great outcome!

Just got back from the emergency vet. We got some drops today (from walgreens of all places where my dog now has his own discount prescription card) that were supposed to stop the pressure. We put a drop in and he got worse all day and now his other eye is doing the same thing. They are keeping him overnight to give him IV pain meds and meds to lower the pressure in his eyes. A week ago he was perfectly fine. This morning he went for a walk fine. God only knows how we are going to pay for all this because we haven't even seen the specialist yet. Feel like hell now.

Wow.... I wish you luck. :( Your dog will probably be fine, hopefully, but I do wish -you- luck. Here I am worried because my dog got fleas. I hope the pain ends soon, so your dog can get back to living the life we all wish we had. :)

Also, good luck on those bills, I know how they really do sneak up and beat you when you least expect it. Animal medicine is sooo expensive, especially when you need to visit several vets because second opinions are so vital on stuff with animals.

I was remiss in not getting back to post an update. My dog is doing very well- he had a lens luxation- the lens broke away in his eye, moved forward, and allowed the liquid in his eyeball to press forward. The lens also abraded the inside of his cornea. He had surgery and had the lens removed. He has had the stitches removed and he is doing well. The pressure did not destroy the eye and the abrasions inside the cornea are healing well. He will be farsighted in one eye and he will be on eyedrops forever but he is back to normal otherwise. Hopefully this is ok to do but I have to plug the vets- http://www.eyecareforanimals.com/ and we were able to finance it with a credit card by http://www.carecredit.com/

We had the vet call and say we can save your dog's eye but we need to operate now but it will be roughly $3500 and we need the money now. After freaking out, we called the Care Credit people and had a card with more than enough on it to pay for the surgery in less than 5 minutes. So, big thanks to the vet and the credit card people. Also big thanks to everyone for kind words and prayers.
