MWF, Tabac and Speick

Hey folks,

Well, I converted one of our other plumbers at work. I ordered him some Tabac. I had given some to my dad for Christmas and he loved it, so I ordered some MWF for myself and ordered one for dad too. Then I thought, well, lets live a little and ordered a speick shave stick for myself along with a speick bath bar.

I'll post my thought on the MWF and speick stick after I have a chance to use them.

Thanks a lot for dragging me into this expensive hobby. I used to be perfectly happy with Williams at 1.99 a puck. It's OK, I forgive all of you.

I still only shave twice a week, but damn it sure is fun.

I thought this was going to save me money - oops.

But at least now I'm spending money on things that bring pleasure to my life rather than wasting money on overpriced carts that I hated besides being expensive.

My reason for turing to wetshaving was to "save money" which you do IF you stick with one soap or cream, one blade, one brush, one cologne. Which we all can come to terms that that will never happen as long as SOTD is around:lol:

I usually manage to only use one soap or cream, one blade, one brush and one cologne per day...

...oh, you meant to only own own of each at a time. Never mind.

I find that not many soaps at any price beat Speick.

I did not care for the bath soap.

And the Speick AS splash is incredible. Highly recommended.

Oh it'd be easy to save money if you really tried.

Filly or Bismark ($20-25) strop
Prelapped China stone $25
Cheap, shave ready straight <$50
Case of Arko, palmolive, similar ~$1-2/50-100g soap $20
VDH Or similarly priced brush <$10

Should keep you going about 5 years or better. Then you're looking at replacing what, the soap, maybe the brush. So another $25-30 every 5 years.

I'm sure something similar could be done with DE's, a little more costly probably after you throw in blades (but subtract hone and strop and save quite a bit on razor). What would 5 yrs of cheap bulk blades cost anyway?

But yeah, not many people manage that kind of restraint.

poor badger!

Well, if you choose to look at the bigger picture, it does save you money. And if it does not, well, it does not actually cost any more.

Example: Penhaligon's English Fern shaving soap, in the wooden bowl, $65. You have decided to treat yourself and splurge on one of the last of these fine soaps. Fine, now you have a soap that you can pamper yourself with once a month for at least twelve and a half years! (Figuring around 150 shaves a bowl, 12 months to a year, one shave a month) So, you have well over a decade of pampering yourself with something special for just what? something like 43 cents a month.

Remember that you are going to use "regular" soaps like Tabac, Trumpers, DRH, etc., for the majority of your shaves anyway and those are going to cost you something like 10 cents a shave (again figuring 150 shaves a puck and a $15 puck cost) perhaps much less if you go with something less expensive.

We often overlook the fact that when we embark on the AD(s) that we are going to end up with a supply that will last us a decade or more depending on the final count of products in rotation. And I don't know about you folks, but I have a vast collection of soaps, for example, that don't cost anywhere near $15 a puck, and more than a handful that cost much more. In the balance, they average out to less than $15 each. I never used canned goo (well, I have, but never long enough to know how long a can lasts) But at, say five bucks a can, if one can lasts for a month, then cost per shave is around 17 cents and if lasts two months then a shave is what 8+ cents each. So, you see, even using some of the more exotic soaps with their associated expense balances out in the long run / big picture. (BTW, my rotation takes me almost three full months to repeat a product.)

When you look at some of the colognes that run upwards of $100 a bottle, the same thing applies. You are not going to purchase an expensive bottle of juice and bathe in it every morning, no, you are going to try it out, then use it when the occasion is correct. Using more pedestrian products for the "everyday" use.

Do not overlook the fact that you are comparing a daily use product that you used to purchace when you ran out of, to one that you maintain quite a few of, and that will last you much longer each, even when compared to on a one for one basis.

With this newfound way of looking at the AD(s) I hope you all feel better about your purchases, and rest well knowing that you are justified in the spending.

YMMV

I honestly don't think anybody saves any money at this

Sure it does. One cheap Omega Boar, feather portable, 100 Israeli Red Pack blades, and say two pucks of 10ish dollar refill that's triple milled for a whole year. That's about 50 for the first year and 30 each following. Good luck with that though.

You have the right idea--FUN

If you have AD you just can say you have an absence of discipline, or alternatively: appreciation & discernment.

Either way you figure it, +1 on the fun. There does not seem to an active forum for Fusion lovers. :001_rolle
