Mustache Wax, input from all!

Greetings everybody,

Im new, 26yrs old and in Cali. Pointless info, why not!

So I finally put together a nice set to start my wet shaving adventures, and i thought... what a better time to try out a mustache as well?

Lets talk mustache wax.. products, techniques, and anything else that might come to mind.

Thanks and looking forward my wet shaving adventures.

I hope someone can chime in with some experience. I just bought a tube of neutral Clubman... I did this to tame my goatee and maybe make my mustache a little nicer looking.

All I can say is it's sticky as anything and hard to apply; it looks white when combed into my reddish beard (i assumed neutral would be clear, not white.) Today I soaked the tube in hot water which helped with application, but it took it a while to actually cool down enough to be waxy again. I guess I'll try a lot more wax next time I use it.

The neutral wax does blend in after a lot of work. Unfortunately my goatee doesn't really care about the fact that I put wax in it. It still does what it wants.

I'm wondering the best way to make a pointy goatee (like clubmanrob's avatar). My goal is to be able to braid it by December (a la Jack Sparrow) but until then I'd like to keep it manageable. (I don't think it's gonna work.)

Anyway, that's my experience using moustache wax for the last two days.

I sport a very fine handlebar which is held in place by any number of waxes that I have in my collection.

There are quite a few products to choose from and all are basically a mix of Vaseline and Beeswax in different ratios to give softer or stiffer holds.

Tins of wax don't cost much so you could try a few;

Firehouse Dark / Light
Firehouse Wacky Tacky
Oregon Wild Hair
Gravy Jay Dark & Creamy / Regular
Cedars Hill Farm Stiff / Soft
Skippy's
Hndlebars (not a spelling mistake)
Weasel Wax

The one I've not tried, but would like to, is Brother's Love and of course there's always the option of making your own.

Most need scraping out of the tin with a finger nail and then smearing over the mustache. Next you can warm up the wax with a hair-dryer as you are combing the 'tache. When you have roughly the right shape and the wax has started to 'set', you can tease the ends into the shape you want with your fingers.

This is a good thread to start!

Movember is on my radar screen and will be here before too long. I should be in 'stache mode a few weeks before November though.

My only experience has been with the clubman product and I wasn't too thrilled with it.

Guys,

So glad to get some good responses.

*King of Kailua - wow, Movember.. I had no Idea, i could see myself doing something like that. I'm having a great time starting my first mustache right now.

And I'll be third person here to say that i've tried clubman and didn't like it. In fact, I purchased and returned it in the same day... I knew I wouldn't use it... too chunky and difficult to use for me.

*In the know... thanks... thanks for info-overload that is! :)
... kidding around. It seems a lot of folks like firehouse... maybe i'll try that... or not... or i dunno.. Any recommendations for us first timers? Something that isn't impossible to use and smells so good everybody will wanna kiss me.. right on the stache!

If it is scent you're after, Skippy's is a great Lavender, the rest mainly smell of wax with the exception of Hndlebars which smells like a stable . . . seriously . . . but I like it.

Skippy's is a bit soft for me so I just use it when I want to tidy the tache rather than style it or shape it.

Firehouse Wacky Tacky might be a good place to start as it is right in the middle of the Stiff / Soft scale and the scent isn't too bad (can't describe it though).

Stern's is probably my favourite though but difficult to find - it comes out the tube as a cream so it is very easy to apply and then it sets very stiff during the time it takes to give it a couple of brushes.

Holy crap is it really approaching Movember already. Where has this year gone!

For the Jack Sparrow look, I'm going to suggest tar. Not only do you get a great hold, but your beard (and your queue) will also be water repellent. You'll have to be careful if you decide to put burning candles or fuze into your beard--check the safety directions that come with the tar.

Interesting. Where might I find this tar? I think it may be a bit hard to remove afterward.
I'm just trying to keep the boss happy until then. The goat has to grow for quite a bit yet and it gets a little wild.

I've tried most of the store bought waxes and have been making my own for years. That being said, got2b glued spiking glue works great.
