Must I Remove Old Epoxy From Plug?

I have a knot that was previously in another brush. I want to set the plug in a new handle. The plug of the knot is covered with the epoxy from the old handle. Do I need to remove the old epoxy from the plug prior to setting it in the new handle? If I do, how do I go about it? Thank you.

you should remove the old epoxy so you can get a proper seat, i would use the flat side of a grinding wheel for the bottom and a dremel to remove from the sides

Agreed, It will also help keep the knot from accidentally setting at an angle instead of vertical position.
