musk scales

ive finally found time to make some scales im going to wait untill i go down my grand parents so i have power tools to work with the piece that these came from was from a bit of musk ive got ive got a good supply of this and i dont have to pay for it so thats a plus and its an expensive piece of timber to buy. although not as figured as musk is sometimes. it started life as a board about 1'' thick

the thing i like about musk is its not porus and its a wood that takes a mirror finish well but i just sanded and went to linseed i want about 10 coats to darken it up more but it doesnt like to suck up finishes so its going to take a while. here it is with 1 coat and unfinished

top is linseed bottom is plain ol musk

Nice looking wood , gonna make some sweet scales . Never heard of Musk wood ... is it from the Lacewood family ?

im not sure about what family.

here in Tasmania we have alot of nice timber like myrtle, sassafras, musk, some real nice blackwood, and burls, you can make sweet crankshaft tables out of big burls

also in tas we are the only place in the world you can get my favourite timber ''Huon Pine''

I have some Huon pine scale blanks that I have been saving for a special blade. That stuff looks great.

that has a quarter sawn look to it. I like it! I wonder how it would look with an aqua fortis treatment? What type of Myrtle do you guys have? I have a couple blocks of Myrtle from the PNW that I like using. It looks really similar to that wood.

im not sure its a pretty hard wood our myrtle and usually deep pink and red but the sassafras where there are minerals near a creak you can get it with blue and purple in the grain but thats rare

So you have a lathe, and access to Huon pine. Why am I not seeing a whole bunch of custom brush handles?

(For the international members, Huon pine is rare as hens teeth. It only grows in old growth forests in Tasmania, and therefore cant be logged. The only stuff you can get has already been chopped down many years ago. A bit like pre ban ivory in the US. It looks a bit like birds eye maple, but nicer.)

ive not had time if i have enough time ill lathe up a few im out at the moment but ill ask about some tonight im all out at the moment. another reason is i thought that ide have trouble shipping a wood like that through the post i thought that there would be heaps of crap trying to get it through quarantine.i
lathed up a few ring stands shaped like bells a few months ago.
I'm a Carpenter by trade and have used many different woods for making scales these are some of mine in my native countries Welsh Yew and the middle one American black walnut, but I have never ever heard of musk wood? what tree is it.

Jamie.

it comes from the musk tree
even over here not that many know about it its a minor species that isnt common because not many are cut and shipped around the place
