Musgo Real Splash purchase (Finally)

Closing in on 7 years here at B&B and I'm finally going to try one of the classic aftershave splashes that has been on my mind going on at least 4 to 5 of those 7 years. I once held a bottle of it in my hand at a Tampa Crabtree & Evelyn store and decided against pulling the trigger on it as I had been a fairly loyal Floris JF aftershave splash guy since 2007. Alternating between the Floris and Proraso splash for the last several years I had been quite happy but the Musgo Real always beckoned me in a way. The stickiness/tackiness comments always kept me from trying it since, but perhaps some of the ideas to cut the juice with some alcohol, (including high proof vodka?!? ...Jim are you serious???) led me to get past that part of the equation. I will attempt a review after I have received it and used it for a few days.

Mike, don't fear the tack. It is really not as bad as it is made out to be at times. If it is, do as Jim suggested and cut it with high proof spirit. I suggest you give it a thorough go as-is first. It is still the best danged commercial aftershave splash I have used and it smells heavenly to boot.

Funny you bring this up. I just completed my annual October Buyathon and a bottle of the Classic was in the mix. So was a bottle of Taylor #74 Traditional.I had used my other bottle of Musgo long ago. I have been forcing myself to use up what different splashes I have laying around before buying too much more. This also let me ignore that rule with things that are special like my Woods of Windsor splash which I use sparingly since you cannot get it anymore. Other than that I have used up quite a bit of stock. #74 Vicrtorian Limes, the Musgo, a couple of D.R. Harris splashes, and several Taylor cologne scented a/s splashes. I still come back to Musgo as the measuring stick.

Cheers, Todd

BTW, the #74 Tradtional is quite good. Old school, better(much better) than the Veg, and is not nearly as heavy or overly strong and long lasting as I had feared. I splashed on quite a bit this morning and it has settled down nicely in the background. Edwardian classy I'd say.

Cheers, Todd

Todd, I trust your judgement 100%. The Victorian Limes is on my radar as well. Finding a nice bottle of Floris JF splash under the Christmas tree wouldn't hurt my feelings either, but its time for me to try some of the old standards I've never ventured toward. Thanks for you friendly and informative response as always. Perhaps when I get back home from my workout today the Musgo will be waiting in the post.

Congratulations Mike!

I am very serious. The original was perfect for me, in every way, the new version needs a 20% dilution of 180 proof vodka to make me happy.

Have you tried Spieck Yet?

Hi Jim, thanks for chiming in... 180 proof Vodka CHECK! Almost bought the Speick (again) I enjoyed it years ago but wanted to snag the Musgo first. The Speick will be an eventual re-buy.... I'm intrigued by the TOBS Victorian Limes as I told Todd.

Mike, the Victorian Limes is a superb choice. It is so much deeper than a regular old run of the mill, last-ten--minutes lime scent. Yet it is unmistakably lime. This is most assuredly an aftershave that will always be on my re-stock list. I like it in warmer weather but it is versatile enough to use whenever you want. And the Musgo is class any time. And the Speick is top shelf too though the scent of the other two is superior to me. That is pure opinion and should not be taken as a mark against Speick.

Cheers, Todd

The difficult task with the Musgo Real Classic Scent splash may be what EDT cologne pairs with it or doesn't clash... Penhaligons Endymion gets the call today. Melding fairly nicely

I don't find it dries tacky. Easily my favorite AS. It's a little heavy for hot weather but great moisturizer for the rest of the year. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th bottle.

Musgo Real splash is one of the best aftershaves I've ever used. I do prefer it in cooler weather though.

In terms of performance - erasing irritation and soothing the skin - Musgo Real is one of the best. But, the tackiness is gross. Especially when its warm out and sweat might be happening. And the scent is a little intense. I've tried "watering it down" by applying to a west face or mixing with a little water and the results have been poor - felt like no AS was being used.

Has anybody tried mixing 50/50 or 1/3 2/3 with witch hazel? I'll give this a shot tonight. I may try the above suggestion by mixing with everclear if the witch hazel mix is not good.

I love Musgo, I've worked through two bottles and need another. It never left my face feeling tacky, but my hands would become tacky if I didn't rinse them after application.
