Musgo Real and lanolin problem . . . How frustrating . . .

I simply love the fragrance of Musgo Real. For me, it epitomizes Spring. I'm hard-pressed to think of a scent I like better (except perhaps that of fresh, real Gardenias and the vicinity of a barbecue pit--make of that selection what you will!).

The problem is that I think I may react to the lanolin, since my shaves with it (The Musgo Real, not the barbecue) aren't the best. I've tried to think of a solution, but to no avail. When this time of year arrives I simply suck it up and submit to less-than-ideal shaves as the cost of experiencing the Musgo Real aroma.

Anyone else experience a lanolin reaction?

Compared to other creams, Musgo Real is definitely on the thirsty end of the scale. In other words, it needs plenty of water. You may want to give this a try before chalking it up to a lanolin allergy or simply a combination of ingredients which doesn't agree with you for some reason.

+1 on using lots and lots and lots of water.

I put 2 to 3 times as much water into MR as compared to other creams, and even more than I use in most soaps.

IMHO, MR performs best when mixed to a sloppy-wet consistency. I keep adding water until the lather almost, but not quite falls off my face. And I add more water with each re-lather between passes.

Try this before you give up on MR entirely.

If you really do have a reaction to the lanolin, but love the smell, maybe you can shave with a cream you can tolerate, and splash on the MR-ASL or EdC instead

Im not sure if you have tried this....lather it in a bowl, then apply it to the fizzog. As mentioned already, this is a thirsty cream & I find that a smaal amount is all that is required.

If you have full blown allergy to lanolin, bowl lathering will not really help.

Are you sure it is the Lanolin? Might want to try another soap with lanolin before you rule it out.

Musgo does not work for me, but I have no problem using other lanolin-containing soaps and creams.

I'm with you on this. I have the same problem, but I'm not sure it's the lanolin. I love Musgo's scent. It's unique even among Musgo's other products. None of the EDCs or the aftershave smell like the cream.

I agree with the advice here. Add more water. Whatever is irritating your skin will be diluted somewhat. That works for me. Plus, I don't use it on a routine basis. I treat myself to it every now and then. Used occasionally, I can enjoy it w/o irritation.

Good luck!

Neither the Musgo a/s nor the colognes smell anything like the cream, unfortunately. The a/s complements the cream, at least, but I don't find the colognes even to be in the ballpark. Heno de Pravia, on the other hand, is a cologne that bears a striking resemblance to the scent of the Musgo cream, so the OP might still be able to follow your advice using that.

Really? I've been wondering about Heno de Pravia for a long time, but was worried it would be too feminine. So it really smells like Musgo? Wow.

I've only ever sniffed it in a shop, and it was a while ago. It didn't strike me as overly feminine, but YMMV. I just remember thinking, "Wow, this smells like Musgo cream."

i too liked musgo but had skin problems after using it. much later, i thought perhaps natural lanolin, which supposedly is not comodogenic , would be different....so i tried some mitchell's wool fat. again, i had breakouts soon after using it.

i think there are people who have problems with lanolin, natural or otherwise.

it's a damn shame because i liked both the MWF and the musgo. still, if it doesn't work...it doesn't work.

I have not tried the Musgo Real cream but I did pick up some MWF bath soap to see if it would grow on me enough to purchase the legendary shave soap. I used it for about a week and it made my skin itch more than anything I have experienced previously. The same thing happened when I used a lanolin containing detergent to wash wool clothes, sure enough the skin started itching although the clothes had been rinced thoroughly in the machine beforehand. So my advice to you is to get the Musgo Real bath soap or even better another lanolin bath soap and if you get the same sort of reaction you can be pretty sure you have lanolin allergy. Good Luck!

I also had a bad reaction to musgo. It really has a great scent and lathers like the best of them. My problem is not the lanolin ( at least I don't think so ) because my favourite soap is MWF, I use it more than any other soap and never had a problem.

The Musgo bath soap does not contain lanolin - at least the old, tallow formulation didn't. If they added lanolin to the newer, veggie formula, I'll stand corrected, but I don't think they did. That being the case, the bath soap won't do any good testing for a lanolin senitivity. The MWF bath soap has it, though, so that would definitely be an option.

I tried it a couple of times last week. I didn't break out or feel irritation and yet I did feel my skin somehow excessively dry. I prefer Erasmic.
