Muhle Silvertip Fibre V1 vs V2

proxy.php

(21mm v1 on left, 23mm v2 on right)

Ok, let me preface by saying I love the V1.

Yesterday I received a 23mm Olive Wood V2 from Connaught. The 23mm actually measures out to 21mm, but the loft is that of the 23mm. I found the V2 to be exactly the opposite of what I have heard on B&B. The loft is higher, splays less, and it works exactly like the $8 nib you can get on TGN. Is this V2 really supposed to be better? I'll stick to my V1 if this is the case.

Since the V1s are on clearance now and my only experience is with V2 (I like it), can you describe the difference in lathering and feel on your face and lather retention? If the V1 is just as good, this is the time to buy one for travel.

That is interesting. I've had both, and I found the V1 very springy and difficult to splay. The V2, which I currently have, I find much less springy and easier to control--a vastly superior brush to the V1. That is a mystery indeed. Maybe your V2 really isn't a V2.

I have the HJM black fibre V1, which splays effortlessly--and I really give it a face lathering workout with lots of different soaps. I vary my grip, often holding the brush to varying degrees from the knot slightly downward, according to the particular feel/effect I want at any given time. It's been a joy to use, and was so inexpensive from Connaught. I'm curious about V2, but am resisting so far.

The bloom is what drives me nuts. If they could make them "pre-bloomed" like on the left, that would be better.

I sold a v2 in 21mm and kept my 23mm, which I'm pretty sure is a v1. It's got a little bit of scritch to the bristles, splays just fine (I thought splay was not deisrable) and whips up gobs of lather. Plus, yeah, it blooms in a way the newer one didn't. I've also got the black fibre version, which is nice and soft, so I think with these two all bases are covered.

Here is a V1 and V2 both direct from Muhle (not through a vendor).

I received the V1 when the first round of synthetic testing occurred last year.

I received the V2 early this year.

Where are the v1s on clearance, pray tell?

Which is exactly why I am surprised with the V2 that I received. It is opposite of that chart.

Hi everyone -- I just wanted to add my two cents on synthetics. For background, I have been wet shaving since about Jan. or Feb. 2009. Over that time, I have acquired silvertip or the equivalent brushes from Rooney (a finest--I hated and returned as too prickly, and a heritage stubby 2, from 2009 (not a 2-band), which I love), Simpson (T4--not 2-band), Semogue (HD), Shavemac (177?), QED - Saville Row (3284?--shorter version that maybe came out in 2009 or 2010?), Vie-long, along with a vintage Rubberset, as well as many boar brushes -- love Semogues and the new Omega B&B brushes from WCS--have another Omega, as well. So I have some experience with brushes--and recently acquired the following synthetics: Muehle V1 and V2 (both 19 mm), Omega Hi-Brush, Muehle Black bristle (21 mm), Kent (whatever the latest is called -- syntax or something); some cheaper, early bristle type brushes. Out of all of the new synthetics -- I like the Muehle V1, Muehle Black Bristel and the Omega Hi Brush the best -- in fact I haven't used anything else for more than a month. I find the Muehle V2 is fine but likely not enough scrubbiness for me -- and I absolutely hate scratchiness. So I would recommend anyone get a Muehle V1 if they are looking to take the plunge, especially if on clearance. I am seriously considering selling all of my other brushes and sticking with my 3 synthetic favorites. I also recently bought a Frank synthetic -- doesn't seem like a latest version though -- I did not like it. The 56 mm loft on the Omega Hi Brush was a little awkward at first, but I have really grown to love it. By the way, I have been a face-latherer exclusively for a couple of years. Hope this is helpful.

Rutgers Football provided the second very positive review of an Omega Hi Brush I've read on B&B, after an initial negative review.

I have 4 Muhle v1 31k256 brushes (mostly bought last year on the BST). 1 get's daily use, the other 3 are backups. I am very satisfied, and have no desire for another brush. The tips are soft, it splays nicely, creates gobs of lather with very little product and it just the best brush of the 30 or so I have owned. It is now the only one in my den.
