Muhle Silvertip Fibre Shaving Brush 39 K 252 Issues

For some reason I am not too impressed with this brush. It is a Muhle Silvertip Fibre Shaving Brush 39 K 252 Horn 19mm

I've read rave reviews. I don't know if I am just too used to having a Boar + Badger brush, that this thing just performs differently. I can never get the right amount of water in it, and getting a lather from it is exteremly difficult. Any pointers here? I bought it to replace my Tweezerman Badger, but honestly I like how the Tweezerman peforms better?

Lots of people like this brush but I didn't like it nearly as much as my real badger and boars. Let's face it, man can't make better what God made right the first time.

It takes a while to get used to a synthetic. Your standard routine of soaking and etc. with badgers and boars do not work on a synthetic. There is some debate is to whether or not to soak it at all (personally, I do soak mine). My advice is go back to basics. Start out with a cream and continually add in water till you get it right; this will give you an estimate of how much water you need.

This is what I do with my brush. I soak it and squeeze out all the water. Then I dip the brush back into a cup with about 1 to 2 cm of water just to get enough water to load the soap. After the brush is loaded. I dip the brush again in a little bit of water and start making lather. By doing this I can control how much water is exposed to the brush (how much water I put in the cup). Best of luck since the Muhle Fibre is pretty much one of the best synthetic on the market.

I have only use my 19mm (same brush as you have) to face lather with as this is what I bought it for (small travel brush to use with shave sticks).

It seems to hold more lather than my boar or badger brushes when used with a shave stick and face lathering.

Hey you can always sell it to me.:sneaky2:

I was torn about which one to get after hearing you talk about your 21mm but I found this 19mm and it is a keeper.

i had one, but preferred my Frank Shaving to it as they both performed equally. i am surprised that you can not get lather from it as most good synthetics are lather monsters with just a bit of soap/cream!
i get more than enough lather for at least 4 passes. What is your procedure on loading the brush?
Keep in mind it may require a bit more water than natural bristles so add little by little while lathering. i would recommend face-lathering while doing this. Good luck.

I give Mühle's STF brushes a gentle squeeze before loading them. They typically need less water and less product than naturals (e.g., MWF needs approximately 15 seconds of swirling, and creams about 2/3 of what you would normally use). They do not need soaking, but soaking won't harm them. They do behave a little different than natural hair brushes, but it should only take a few tries to get used to them.

I face lather. I let the brush sit in hot water, I then do 3 up down shake motions on the brush to get the excess water out. I swirl for 10-15 seconds (Mikes Soap), and face lather. Ill get a real thick lather, and I feel that all the soap is bundled up in this thick lather, not leaving enough for a second pass, the brush then drys out, and seems like it needs more water. However when I try with more water initially it becomes very messy. I just cant find the right balance. When I go for a second pass I will have to reload the brush again with more soap which seems excessive to me.

I also face lather. After wetting my brush with whatever temperature water I feel like that day, I squeeze it (not shake it) and load for 12-15 seconds in my mug. The lather goes through several stages. When the bubbles have gone and the lather is thick and silky, I start face lathering. I always have enough lather for 4-5 passes. After each pass, I go back to the mug and give a few swirls to reload from what is in the mug.

Give it a try! I hope this helps.
