MÜHLE R41 - Truely Amazing!

In your picture above, the R41 is not like the scalloped head. I still say it does function as an open comb. The whiskers can reach the blade.
I think we said enough on this subject.
:banghead:. Yes, sure have. Happy shaves.

product description
Our Muhle R41 Safety Razor Open Comb

TRADITIONAL – Safety razor from MÜHLE, open comb, handle material chrome-plated metal

The Material – Chrome

Without chrome the world would forfeit a lot of its lustre. In the finish used for our wet shaving accessories it demonstrates its best qualities: The material is corrosion-resistant, very long-lasting and has a luxurious, alluring lustre. When contrasted with this, the colours and shapes of other premium materials are shown to their very best advantage.

The Razorhead – Tooth comb

The safety razor with open tooth comb was developed specially for practised wet shavers. Due to the principle of its construction, which features a special blade angle, the model allows a vigorous, very direct shaving technique.

As on safety razors with closed combs, the blade is held in place by the curvature of the cap. The combination of open tooth comb and a gap behind the foam edge ensures that the edge is kept free of stubble and residues. This innovative design also makes subsequent cleaning easier.

The shaving result is dependent on the factors beard growth, the density and length of the beard hair, and how these interact with the blade and safety razor. Some will achieve optimal results with a very sharp blade, while others can profit more from gentler blades.

When shaving, the safety razor should at first be drawn across the skin without applying any pressure at all. Shaving with the grain is often sufficient and renders a second shave in the opposite direction unnecessary. The skin should be stretched taut at all times.

The safety razor with its toothed foam edge is predestined for men with a denser, stronger beard growth or for those who prefer to sport three-day stubble. The model variants include handles made of white and black high-grade resin or with chrome-plated chasing. They can be purchased from us and by retailers everywhere.

I thought it would be interesting to see how Muehle described their razor, I not trying to agitate the debate but maybe is just a OC with training wheels :em2700:

Distributors often describe it as an open comb, following Muhle's lead I presume. I don't know whether this is a holdover from 2010 when they were selling the r41 which was really an open comb, a marketing thing to differentiate the r41 from the r89 or what exactly. But yeah a safety bar with training wheels is pretty accurate.

"MÜHLE offers the classic safety razor in variants with a closed or an open tooth comb. Due to the principle of their construction and a specially adjusted blade angle our open models facilitate a vigorous, very direct shaving technique. The combination of an open comb with broad teeth and a gap behind the foam edge ensures that stubble and foam are transported away directly, keeping the blade edge free of residues."

Only one more day...you can do it!
I couldn't do it! I had to shave today. Which actually is ok because today's shave is going to be the shave I judge the 41 against. I took my time and did a 3 pass shave ... it was ok, but just ok. It's the reason why I went to a Feather Artist Club SS - it gives me a damn fine shave always.

I'm really hoping this works out because a DE loaded with a personna red is a fine thing indeed.

I pair my 2013 R41 with an ATT Atlas handle. I like the added heft better. The R41 gives a very close shave indeed!

Thanks for sharing, I ordered R102 (same thing but with a white handle) and am waiting on delivery. I was planning on changing out the handle for a knurled but have read in a few different places that the handle was a pleasant surprise and an actual keeper. I haven't tried Derby yet but already decided to go as mild as possible as well to test the waters. If anyone else is interested they are going for $27 on amazon. It is titled as "closed comb" however which can be misleading but the R41 head is hard to classify for sure.

Hi James, I have no problem with the handle, I kind of enjoy it. I'm still going through different blades looking for jut the right one. I used a feather today and it cuts really well but not quite as smooth as I would like. Be somewhat aware that you will get a lot of blade feel with this razor, you'll be able to hear it cut, but go easy at first till you get the right feel for the razor, it does not need any pressure, just let the razor do the cutting. Great razor, you won't be sorry.

I could never get a smooth shave from it. Always felt like it was pulling my beard out instead of cutting it.
i was of the same opinion, then someone suggested two things that have changed my experience. One, add a heavier handle. My Muhle handle was very light and I replaced it with a Fendrihan Ambassador. Two was to add a shim to give more exposure. I get pretty smooth shaves with my R41 now.

Percentage-wise, adding a shim on a large exposure razor like an R41 increases exposure by an insignificant amount. The shave improvement you're noticing is due to the stiffening of the blade due to the increased support.

Try shaving at a much steeper angle if you haven't already. To my face, I don't like the shave of an R41 at all shaving shallow, but it's a pussycat shaving steep; a razor I can use every day.

I don't believe a handle change with effect the shave at all.
It's easier to control angle and pressure with a properly balanced razor than one that's not. With exposure like the r41 has this becomes particularly important.

The R41 on this forum has always been considered a hybrid open comb. Or just an open comb. And that's a fact.

For what it's worth, I would call it a closed comb but it looks like Muele doesn't like that description. I'll probably keep calling it a closed comb but I must admit that I like the hybrid moniker. I sort of understand why they call it a tooth comb but that's a term that somehow doesn't quite sit well with me.

We humans love to classify things into caterogies. Where things do not fit tight we get ourselves into trouble.:001_smile
Mühle has designed an open comb pattern on the safety bar, it´s awkward but works so well: it lets lather meet the edge of the blade just like a classic OC, and there´s a huge space behind the OC/bar to let the lather leave the razor.
I really love this design. I just wish Mühle could come with the same head but in a molded stainless steel (using the same technology as Rockwell does). That would be nice.
Please Mühle, make that for us!
