What's new

Muehle R106 = wow

So a few weeks ago I went on a hunt for the perfect razor to match my Feather blades and ended up buying three new ones: the R106, a Merkur 11C, and the Feather all-Stainless. I was finally able to collect them today and decided to use the R106 off the bat, partially since I am now terminally afraid of damaging the Feather, which is a piece of art, and also as a "save the best for last" thing. Yeah, oops.

Off the bat, the R106 is a really nice looking razor. It doesn't have the heft or grip of the short-handled Merkurs, but the finish and construction are top notch and I found it very easy to control despite the slightly long handle. It's not that much shorter than my 23C, which I've been using as a daily shaver for about the past month, but it's far, far easier to maneuver on your face. Also, when you choke up on the handle the shave is still very comfortable, which I didn't find was the case with the 23C. The only negative is that the rounded black handle doesn't offer much at all in the way of grip. I didn't have any problems with drops or slips, but it's not the most secure feeling in the world. Maybe also a tiny point off for being a three-piece, but that's so YMMV as to be pointless.

As for the shave, I used a fresh Feather and within two or three strokes I could feel a marked difference from yesterday's shave. The head of the razor is superlative. It glides extremely well, which is usually a problem for me, and the proper blade angle is easy to find. I found it more aggressive than the 23C (almost on par with the 37C Slant) but without a hint of irritation. This is especially useful since I've been Method Shaving, which requires more passes/time with blade on your face than my usual shave. But even with all of the passes, my face feels incredible. I got a couple of weepers, but they were more down to me being overzealous/stupid as I got more into the shave and wanted to test the limits of the razor.

The overall result was an outstanding shave, maybe the best I've ever gotten to date. It was easy, enjoyable, noticeably more comfortable than usual, and as close as I've ever been to BBS and without a trace of "overreach" problems. It has definitely ended my time with the 23C, which is going on the BST tonight. To be honest, if I'd bought and used this before purchasing the other two razors, this would be a RAD killer for me. I can't recommend this razor enough, especially if you're a Feather user. I'm going to stick with it for about a week and then move on to the Feather, and I'm very curious to see if it can top this performance. Right now I can't imagine another razor doing any better.

One last point: this razor is a fairly ludicrous 45 bucks shipped from The Superior Shave. That's a great value for such a good razor and they're a fantastic vendor, so there's very little reason to hold back on the R106, IMO.

I have a Mühle R89, similar to your R106 (same head, the only difference being the handle) and I love it!
I simply don't feel the need for another razor. RAD killer? Indeed.

That has been my question. I really have discovered that I can live with one or two razors that I love. I have been living with a SuperSpeed and Merkur HD for a few years and unpacked my old Future I acquired before I knew any better and put away before I did anymore damage to my face.

But, it was great shave and so I came here to learn more about some long term razors that I can settle on. The Mühle has come up and of course the Feather. I like the idea of a stainless steel razor. But I am willing to get 3 Mühles for the price of 1 Feather if they're that good. I have 3 boys who I look forward to teaching the art of Wet Shaving one day as well, and I'd love to start them with something quality.

I can't yet offer a comparison to the Feather (coming soon), but on the basis of today's shave I would say that this is easily a razor to "settle down" with. Especially if price is an issue.

MaxJ,

The Muhle R109 (very similar to the R106) is one of my favourite DEs. For me, the Iridium Super in combination with the 109 gives me super shaves :001_smile

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

Yep it is a great razor. I have both the R106 and the R89. Both are great razors.
And yes, putting a Iridium blade gives you a great, smooth shave.
Also try a Permasharp(not Gillette Permasharp). Great blade.

Some Day 2 thoughts:

- the longevity of yesterday's shave was pretty amazing, I'm fairly sure I could have skated today without a shave. Only about 14 hours apart from this morning's, but my face still felt very smooth and looked presentable, which is not typically the case

- the blade felt fine on its second shave, no discomfort and equally as close-cutting as yesterday

- all of the handling characteristics were exactly the same, as was the result

- a little mild burn today, but I attribute that to having shaved twice in such quick succession, I'll be very surprised if I find that tomorrow

In short, another great shave with this razor, certainly nothing on the second glance to qualify anything I said yesterday.

(By the way, so this is an absolutely identical razor to the R89 except for the handle? May have to pick one up to see if I like the grip better...so much for the death of RAD... :glare:)

MaxJ,

You could also consider getting a custom handle; there are a few persons on B&B that supply custom handles (e.g. Cooncat Bob) :)

Have fun !

Best regards

The difference between the two is the handle.
The handle of the R89 is a bit lighter than the R106. Both have similar "gripping" abilities.

And yes, so much for RAD
I remember I first bought the R89 and figured to buy a backup. I like it that much.
So I ended up buying a R106. The black handle looked kewl :thumbup1:

A good suggestion, but probably a bridge too far for me. The grip isn't bad by any means, I don't think it would be worth the expense of a custom handle.

i have the EJ89L, which i believe also has the same muhle head. I compared these in the Feather AS threads. I found the 89 to be very nice and luxurious almost. However, there was something about the Feather that, for me, trumped the 89. I am typically price sensitive, but i have so far kept both.

The muhle head-ed razor is very nice and priced nicely.

It will be interesting to see how you compare them.

I'll agree that the head is a piece of shaving beauty. I can't imagine I'll ever part with my R89, no matter what other razors I eventually acquire.

The R106 is the most versatile high quality modern razor that I know.

I have no problems with the handle, in fact I like it as much as the metal curled handle of the open comb R41.

The R106 + Feather is a true classic!

I have a R89 and SWMBO has an EJ DE86, both have the same head. My R89 is awesome in every way, I honestly can't imagine having a better razor. TBH it is a country mile better than my '53 Gillette Superspeed.
