Mud Runs

Is anyone else as addicted to mud runs as I have recently become?

I am not a good distance runner, so the short runs between obstacles is perfect for me. I also have no desire to run a road race where the only objective is to get from Point A to Point B in the shortest amount of time, but throw in a cargo net, some water, maybe some fire, and a lot of mud, and I'll gladly run from obstacle to obstacle just to find out whats next.

The other thing that I really like about these types of events is the comradely between the friends you are running with, and the strangers who helped push you over a wall, or the one you pulled out of the lake. Some of these events are timed, others are not, but the time is a non consideration for most who do these, and I feel like someone who is pushing themselves to finish with a fast time is missing one of the best parts of the event. The ability to pay it forward, and reach out and grab someone's muddy arm, and assist them up or out of one of the obstacles.

I've contemplated running in one of these. I use to run cross country in high school and this seems like the more extreme version of those runs. I'll be looking for one near me but it might not happen before winter.

I've got myself planned into one for next year. It's my motivation for my Crossfit training. I'm excited!

What did you do to prepare? I'm a big guy (6', 250lbs, not much of it muscle yet but working on it!) so I'd be leary of someone trying to assist me over a wall. Maybe a couple of someones may be able to do it working together. LOL. Which ones have you completed and what did you find the biggest challenge to be? My options up here (Toronto-ish, Canada) are Spartan, Tough Mudder, Urban Warrior, and Warrior Dash.

Cheers,

M.

For the 5k events if you can jog 2k you would probably be fine. All the events I've done so far have been 5kers, and there were 300 pound girls finishing them, granted most just walked, but they did finish. For most of the obstacles you usually do have to wait a minute or so so that give you a chance to take a breather before going onto the next obstacle. You'll want to practice running outside. A treadmill will be helpful, but running over grass, and rocks, or through the woods is the best way to run. I like to do sprints to really open up the lungs, and get the heart pumping for a brief period of time. After I did my first one, my whole outlook on things you see every day changed. Now everything I look at I envision climbing on or crawling through. This week I was using the trusses in the picnic shelter at the park as monkey bars.

I'm registered for the Mud on the Mountain event Nov 3rd at Seven Springs resort. It's a 7 mile course up and down the mountain. This will be my longest one so far, should be fun.

I recently completed a 100K trail relay with a team of five. Dances With Dirt is the series. I did the one here in Hell, Mi. Its basically 66 miles of gnarly single track trail through the woods, mud, rocks, ruts, cow **** ladden fieldswith extreme up and down hill, heck even one section which was running 1 mile in a river. It was great LOL
