What's new

Mr Brog Churchwarden #14 stem just broke : Advice?

I can't believe it. A month of really enjoying pipe life and then putting it back together today (after lettting it breath open for a day) it just snapped bang into the shank :(

So now the shank is full of plastic (which I can get out with a bit of time and care) but I have no stem.

Does anyone have any recommendations? It's this pipe here : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/22119071...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

:(

What to do! I don't want to wait another 3 weeks for another (if I order a new pipe). Anyone have suggestions?

I'm in Australia if that helps?

A new stem can be made, or it may be possible to have the tenon replaced, but it probably would cost as much as a new pipe.

mmm, it's only a $25 pipe... For me it's the time of waiting a new arrival more than that (3 weeks). I'll do it if I have to. I've contacted the seller and Mr. Brog on ebay also and asked if they stock spares. No response from either as yet. Will see I guess. :(

Last time I looked at the bay I saw some replacement Churchwarden stems. Wonder if they will work with a little modification.

you should see if walkerbriarworks has a churchwarden stem that will fit or maybe you can modify the mortise in your pipe to accommodate it and then you could also interchange it with some mm cob bowls

They do replace them, but for $5 and $10 shipping, considering the whole thing cost me only $30 with shipping it's hard to just get a stem, I should probably purchase a whole new one.

Cavefish, no, I'd had it unplugged from the shank all night airing, give it some breathing space and whatnot and just put it back in, really straight I thought and it just cracked and left part of the stem and the little metal filter thingy in there also.

seanusa, thanks for that tip. I've just had a good look over their site. Tempting, especially if this new replacement breaks... mmm, just got to make a decision and do it :)

I was taught to gently twist the stem back into place. Not sure if you do that but that motion should reduce the strain on the stem as it returns to it's rightful place. Anybody else with greater pipe experience please correct my ways if I am in the wrong!

Mmm may have been a slight twist, I usually do. A bit of research shows it's common for the Brog stems to break. Made to a budget I guess. Really, not cool. Either way, I need / want my pipe in operation. A new stem it is. Those cobs from briarworks have my attention though. Mmm a bent churchwarden cob. :)

MM Washington banded (filtered) w/8 in bent churchwarden stem that fits filtered pipes but is not filtered itself. I love this setup and you can put a number of other bowls on this stem or get the stem for unfiltered pipes and choose another handful of bowls depending on what you like but make sure you get the right stem for the right pipe.

Sean, how dare you read Tolkien and smoke anything other than Frog Morton or one of the Middle Earth Pipeweed series? :cursing::tongue_sm
I smoked Squadron Leader as well as FM while reading Tolkein. After all, Sam Gawith was a Brit, as was the author.

As an update, and a bit of fun/terror, I was able to order 2 new stems for a very cheap price, but must wait THREE weeks for delivery. I just don't want to wait that long for a bowl of relaxation, so have improvised. I raided my daughters texta / colouring in pen collection, found one that was dead and ripped it to bits, cleaned it out with pipe cleaners and the like and made this little 3 week, temporary modification. It'll get me through :)

Raiding the kid's toybox to smoke a bowl? You should be awarded something for that

Was thinking whilst chuffing away on the verandah just now, that this could be the start of a new trend. Obscenely bright coloured stems. All the hipsters'll be sporting pink and blue stems them by this time next year, you watch :)

Pff. Hipsters won't smoke pipes, it'll affect their PBR fund too much!
