Movies for Halloween 2013

New movie restorations of classic horror films on Blu-Ray in time for Halloween.

Region A
The Americas (except Greenland) and their dependencies, East Asia (except mainland China and Mongolia), and Southeast Asia.

Vincent Price fans have much to be excited about this Halloween.
  • House of Wax has been restored to full 3D glory on Blu-Ray-3D. Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) is include as an extra, but is not restored. It will play on standard Blu-Ray players, but without the 3D effects.
  • The Fly (1958) looks great
  • The Vincent Price Collection -- coming October 22, 2013
    • The Pit & The Pendulum
    • The Masque Of The Red Death
    • The Haunted Palace
    • The Fall Of The House Of Usher
    • The Abominable Dr. Phibes
    • Witchfinder General

  • Halloween (1978) 35th Anniversary Edition. The previous release was somewhat controversial. This version has been restored properly.
  • The Uninvited (1942/1944) Criterion is releasing this on October 22, 2013.
  • Nosferatu (1922) Kino is releasing this on November 12, 2013. Eureka! (Masters of Cinema) is releasing this in the UK on November 18, 2013. When these two companies released the DVD, more people preferred the Masters of Cinema version, but neither was a clear winner.
  • The Haunting (1963) is coming October 15, 2013
  • White Zombie (1932) has been put out by Kino. But hold off. That restoration has a lot of critics. VCI is putting out a "Cary Roan Special Signature Edition" on May 6, 2014 that promises to be much better.

Region B
Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan), Australia, New Zealand, and their dependencies.
  • Black Sunday (1960) Although previously released in the US by Lorber Films, Arrow Video released this definitive set with both the AIP version and the European version "The Mask of Satan". "I Vampiri (1956)" is included as a bonus.
  • Black Sabbath (1963) Although previously released in the US by Kino, Arrow Video released this definitive set with the silly American/English version as a bonus.
  • The Wicker Man (1973) is coming on October 14, 2013 from StudioCanal

For Everyone
Hammer Films has released about a dozen films on Blu-Ray. They're a mixed bag, but all are better than any DVD. So far, there's only a few US releases, but a few Australian releases will play there. Most were issued in the UK (region B).

You can also see a few Hammer Films online: http://www.youtube.com/user/hammerfilms

If you missed it last year, pick up Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection. They're also available separately. The UK Blu-Ray set is about half the price and is region free, so it will work on North American players. Those with US addresses should get it there to save some money.
  • Dracula (1931)
  • Dracula (1931) Spanish version
  • Frankenstein (1931)
  • The Mummy (1932)
  • The Invisible Man (1933)
  • The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
  • The Wolf Man (1941)
  • The Phantom of the Opera (1943)
  • The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
