What's new

Movie/TV characters past or present you just love to hate.

Every good movie or tv series needs a character we love to hate.

Here's a few of mine, J T Walsh's character in the movie Breakdown was a guy I loved to hate and so was J R in Dallas. Tony Soprano's mother from the Soprano's was another character that grated on me also.

Buy loving to hate the character doesn't mean it was a bad person/actor, movie or tv series. J T Walsh played a great character in Breakdown and it was a top movie. I used to love watching Dallas and the Soprano's was the best ever.

So you got any characters you just loved to hate?

I'd have to say Micheal Ironside. He's been in a lot of T.V. shows and movies and on few occassions is a good/decent guy. But he's always been a good BAD guy! :tongue_sm Take for example, Total Recall "See you at the party Victor!" lol!:lol: I'm not sayin' I dont like him or nothin' just he's been in a lot of,..."stuff". Good actor.

Temperence Brennan, the lead character on Bones. She has absolutely no social skills whatsoever. I don't wish any ill to befall her, I just hate her insensitivity.

I always hated the characters that Edward Arnold played in the 1930's Frank Capra movies like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, You Can't Take It With You, and American Madness. He always played a greedy rich a*#hole which made it easy to hate him.

Tony Soprano's mother from the Soprano's

That's Livia as portrayed by Nancy Marchand. An *amazing* acting job. Her passing was a major blow to the show. Of course Junior Soprano (Dominic Chianese) and Paulie Walnuts (Tony Sirico) fit into that "love to hate" category as well.

And a newcomer in this category who can't be ignored is Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) from Inglourious Basterds. In a recent interview Quentin Tarantino said Landa was the best character he has ever written. I think the opening "chapter" of inglourious Basterds, starting with the Green Leaves of Summer theme song, is one of the best things on film and it is largely due to the Landa character.

On a different plane of creepiness is The Office's Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

Jack Lord's Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-O. Bad acting (or maybe script or maybe both) along with an irritating smugness just makes me want to grab him by his lapels and shake him all the while telling him ... don't be such a doufus.

Marcus Welby.
You must be a communist to dislike Robert Young.

James Spader in Boston Legal was another one I loved to hate but then at times didn't mind, on the other hand Danny Crane is da man!

How can ya hate Paulie and Junior? I cracked up many a times with those two. Nancy Marchand acted a great part in the Soprano's.

Don Fanucci in Godfather II was another I hated, glad De Niro popped him! Almost burned down the block of flats doing it.

That's the "love" part of "love to hate". :001_smile

I guess every Sopranos character was a selfish SOB, but those two (and Livia) were probably the extreme cases. If there was a Psychopaths Anonymous they would be on the posters.

man i wish junior was my grandad and paulie me uncle.

And another! Almost any character played by Lawrence Tierney.

Several good stories about him on the Reservoir Dogs DVD.

The commentary of Born To Kill says they used a stunt double for him in a fight scene just so he wouldn't hurt the other actor -- figured he would never puil a punch nor swing and miss with that stick.

First two from Born to Kill. Third one from Reservoir Dogs.
