Most you've *overpaid* for a razor

It's the Christmas shopping season, and overpaying for stuff is on my mind. Inspired by this recent thread, I wonder if anyone cares to share their experiences with paying too much for a razor, particularly a vintage one. I suspect that many of us have been there when we're starting out. Of course, no matter what price you pay, somebody else will tell you that they got the same thing for $0.50 at a yard sale, but I'm talking about paying way more than the hypothetical going rate.

I'm not asking what the most you've paid for any razor is, if you think it was a reasonable price. For the record, though, it's $52.40 shipped in my case, for a Kampfe Star Lather Catcher in the original box. It is in excellent condition, missing the wedge blade that would have come with it, but it takes regular SE blades. I don't think that was too much in this case.

The worst I overpaid was $46.01 shipped for a Pal adjustable in the box. I'd been watching these for a while on eBay, and they all seemed to be going in the $30-$40 range. After a while I said the heck with it and put in a high last second snipe. After that, I started seeing them go for under $20, and semi-accidentally picked up another for $11.49 shipped.

My first vintage razor was a 1948-50 Super Speed in decent condition. Little spots of brassing all over the head, but fully shaveworthy, I even just used it as a travel razor. $29.02 was too much, though. Later I got a second one in much better condition as part of a lot of four razors, average price $6.21.

Schick L1 injector for $25.54. What was I thinking? It was my second injector, I think.

Now that I think of it, my Merkurs may have been overpriced, but at least I paid the going rate.

Of course someone might say that their multiblade cartridges cost way too much, but that's not quite what I had it mind.:wink2:

So if you've come to realize that you got taken on some of your vintage purchases, don't feel bad; you aren't alone.

Merry Christmas everyone!

In a fit of insanity, I paid $90 for a near-mint but uncased President last night. I don't know if that was overpaying or not, but it's the most I've spent on a vintage razor.

I paid $18 at an antique store for a Gem 1912 SE. It was the first one I'd seen while searching specifically for them, so I didn't balk too much at the price. But got it home to find that one of the blade clips was broken off, so now it is just an $18 piece of junk. And I later discovered these things are $5-10 on ebay.

Even before I read this part of your post, I was thinking about a PAL Adjustable Stainless Steel that I paid $34 for ... the price is in the range you quote as being normal for this model in a case. I fell in love with the way this razor looked, and I bid on several of them before I won it on eBay.

Unfortunately, when I shaved with it, I found it was horrible. It didn't work for my face at all. After doing half a pass with the PAL, I put it away and finished the shave with my 34G.

I don't know if you'd call this overpaying, but its one purchase I regret.

I've been looking for several years for a military set - the nickel-cased version with the eagle, as seen at the top of this post by Mr. Razr.

Found one in a little shop in Ohio on my vacation. Asking price was $250.

I paid $150.

But that was from a collecting perspective - something missing from my collection that I'd tried to find, without luck, and I could afford to splurge (maybe not eat, but I could splurge! :w00t: )

Is it worth it? Probably not. Although the case is in excellent shape (except for some sticky tape they put on the mirror to keep it in the lid - grrrrr!) and looks beautiful, I probably won't use the razor regularly.

I paid 0.00 for a flair tip, fat-boy adj and a super adj.

That's not nice. :mad3:

My first vintage razor purchase was made on the bay for $19.99. A cased fat-handle Tech. Then in a $13 shipped lot of junk which I bought for the Old Spice Mug it contained, I got a surprise Ball-end Tech which I found I liked better. After maybe 7 shaves with the pricey fat-handle, I just gave it to a friend of mine who I converted along with a couple packs of Derbys.
I haven't paid over $20 for a vintage razor yet, so my most expensive buy so far is still my Merkur 23C, which, while very shiny, doesn't consistently deliver great shaves like my super-cheap GEMs do every time.

I didn't buy one but I think the Feather All Stainless is overpriced (by 100 percent).

Thanks,
Mike

For collectors, the law of averaging plays a good part in taking the bite out of overpaying. I may have to pay $200 for "rare razor X" but I also got "rare razor Z" for $50.

Very good point and a nice reminder. I have acquired a couple at very nice prices. In one case, I had to talk the seller up in price (I know her, do business with her fairly frequently, and it was severely underpriced) once - not because I wanted to pay more, but because it was the right thing to do. I still got it at a terrific price, and she got a better price for it than was marked.

There are several possible answers. Most total amount overpaid, or most overpaid relative to value. Not in total value. But, in relative value, I got absolutely no value from my first purchased Pakistan razor.

I do well on Ebay purchases. But, not always! Recently, I paid nice money for a great looking W&B with a very unusual set of scales. No mention made in the description of flaws, and description implied just "used." The seller photographed laying on left side to hide fact that scales were literally smashed and free wheeling.

I decided I wanted one in a case...so I found a Gold Fat Handle Tech in a blue padded hinged box...it was very nice and appeared unused...I paid $55....for a Tech....I had it for a year, and sold it last month at a gunshow for $60 to someone else whose eyes were bigger than their wallet.....i threw in 2 boxes of vintage blades so I didn't feel guilty....

:ohmy:What??So the Feather is worth nothing?Completely disagree with that statement.
Sure it is not one of the least expensive razors but it is a great razor when loaded with a Feather blade.

Hello Paul,

No. I think the Feather is worth about $90. It is currently selling for $180. Therefore, it is overpriced by 100 percent.

Thanks,
Mike

I over paid for my Pils. I paid the going rate which I think is way too much for what you get.

I paid $100 for a Fatboy in excellent condition.

I paid $49.90 including shipping for a brand new, MIB from the vendor Merkur HD. What's that you say, that sounds perfectly reasonable? Probably is, but the vendor said it shipped on Nov. 8 and I am still waiting for it. I have no reason to doubt the vendor. It is probably floating around in a post office somewhere. What ticked me off was that I sent the vendor an email after a few weeks to see if it had, perhaps, been returned to him for some reason, and I never got a response. Grrrrrrrrr!
