What's new

Most common topics at B&B - is it Groundhog Day?

hi wetshavers - I was just reading some of the topic titles and it struck me that there is a repeatable cycle of topics here at B&B and the longer we spend here the more often we see the same topics. I for one have stopped posting in the 'What's your cream/brush/soap/razor/razor+blade/AS/fragrance topics', it was fun when I first started and wanted to get my post count up but now I'm more selective with regards the topics I read and post on.

anyway, this has lead me to ponder (Dave Letterman-style) what I consider to be The Top 5 Most Common Shaving Topics at B&B based my opinion (I've not searched or counted topics):

5 - Just had my first shave - wow... (love these ones - always great to hear from excited newbs!)
4 - I was terrified of using a slant/R41/SE/tech (insert razor of choice), thought I was going to die/bleedout/take-my-head or face-off (etc) but didn't and ended up having a great shave!
3 - What's the sharpest/best/smoothest/most aggressive blade?
2 - Then there's the - I need your advice to choose my next razor/blade/AS/brush etc but invariably the OP never returns or picks something that the minority of posts recommended
1 - Anything Arko related - that is: it stinks, it's great, it really stinks, I love it, it smells like (insert anything that has a vague citrus or lemon scent), it's cheap, shaves great, it doesn't smell nice, anyone know where I can buy some etc...

(not wanting this to turn into something unpleasant - I think this will be a fun topic)

what do you think are the Top 5 Most Common Shaving Topics at B&B?

Most threads, when broken down to the essentials, can be rendered simply as:

"How can I be more like Phil?"

very clever Alex - I wish I had those skills!

Isn't that the whole point of this board? To trade information and experiences? To help the new guy learn how to do things the right way?

The cynicism of this thread is disappointing to a newb like myself...

hey RJ - I love newbs, see my point 5. I never said there was anything wrong with members posting what's on their mind or what's important to them - we were all newbs at some stage. I'm just saying that when you've been here a while (I lurked for a long time before I joined up) there is a fair bit of repetition. just trying to have fun is all, don't get burned by the topic. no-one is degrading new members here. in fact most of the topics mentioned above are made by non-newbs.

It is just for a laugh.

The same things come up all the time for a reason, they are what people want to talk about the most.

It would be boring if people just read really old threads all the time instead of starting a new one on the same topic and hearing a new set of opinions on that subject.

There is probably only a totally original thread every couple of weeks at best anyway.

Yes, we do see certain threads come up again and again, which I take as a good thing - a sign of an active and successful discussion board.

My hope is that there will always be members willing to respond in a positive and constructive way. I also hope that reading this thread does not discourage newer members from asking their questions.

I am also impressed by how inviting posters are here versus many other discussion boards where new posters are chastised for not searching first before asking questions. While I tend to still search, and look at FAQs, I also appreciate the patience and willingness to answer questions. This is a great group of people!

Of course. Though anyone with a bit of Internet forum experience should know how to search for the basic information, see how people frame questions and supply their own information to get good responses, etc. Of course I'm assuming many do not have that experience and don't bother to read the sticky threads where a lot of that information is available.

As has been said, it isn't a bad thing--more like a humorous thing. Especially when there are two or three threads with the same question on the same page. Some people like to start threads, it seems. Again nothing wrong with that. There is also nothing wrong with joining a thread where your very question is already being discussed.

BTW, do I need pre-shave oil? Which is the best one?

Literally every other forum I have been a part of seems to be about nothing but exchanging insults and trolling in general and it completely ruins it for people who are genuinely taking it seriously. Doesn't matter what the forum is about it is almost always like that apart from on this site.

I am a member of several forums (and various topics) and not a single one even remotely resembles your description. What kind of forums are you a member of? Or are you saying "literally every" as a substitute for "some."
