More stones found - any good?

Hi all,

I picked these up this morning for a few £ at a local boot-sale.

The Norton India is 8"x2" and the other stone is approx 1 1/2 x 7". I know nothing about either, but think maybe the Norton may be useful for setting the bevel, and the second stone (which I think may be slate) could (after lapping) be an ok finisher?

As always, any advice appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Slates very tremendously - could be a great finisher, or not. Has to be cleaned, lapped, and tested. If it's saturated with oil it could prove to be problematic to clean up.

The Norton is probably very coarse. I don't know that I'd use it with razors unless I had a big wedge that needed a lot of steel removed.
Those stones came in a few different grit combinations - I had (I think) an IM2 that was 320x ish (red) and 180x ish (black).

Thanks.. I cleaned the slate (?) up and lapped it....well smooth! It doesn't appear to have seen oil so I could be lucky. I'll try it later and report back.

One side of the Norton is very rough, but the finer side looks smoother (through my loupe) than my 1k Norton. It needs a bit more lapping as it's slightly dished in the middle. I'll report back on that one too!

I don't think any India stones were close to 1k in grit on any scale.
The finest being 300x-ish if I remember correctly.

Please also describe the smell of the stone when slurry is raised, texture of slurry. Run a razor on it with just water, does it feel gritty? does it feel 'slick' or 'slimy' after a few passes with just water?
