What's new

Montreal and Quebec City

My wife and I are planning as short trip to Quebec this summer. I need some wet shaving related recommendations.

Where can I get a quality shave?
Where can I buy a DE razor blades?
Are there any antiques stores/markets that my might carry old razors?
Are there any stores that carry European shaving soaps/cream?

Thanks!

This page should help: http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Quebec_Shopping_and_Suppliers

To answer your questions specifically.

Honestly, no idea. I know that Saint-Catherine street in Montreal has a few barbers but I got no clue if they do straight shaves or not.

Where can I buy a DE razor blades?
If you need them locally, a pharmacy such as Jean Coutu or Pharmaprix should have DE blades but they are pretty expensive. I know that Jean Coutu carries some Wilkinson Sword made in Germany (I think) for 6 or 7 dollars for 5 blades. Pharmaprix is another pharmacy, it's the equivalent of Shoppers Drugmart but the "French" version.

Are there any antiques stores/markets that my might carry old razors?
None that I know of with a good deal. Vasco Cigars in Montreal on St-Catherine street has some but everything is overpriced. You got to go to the back of the shop to get to the wetshaving stuff. The shaving cream is not too badly priced in there.

Are there any stores that carry European shaving soaps/cream?
Vasco would be the only place that I know of.

I was in Montreal last month. Vasco Cigars at 1377 Ste. Catherine W. (cross street Crescent, near Ogilvy's IIRC) is probably the only place I'd head for wetshaving gear. Their razors were crazy expensive and I didn't inquire about the brushes (only Muhle?), but it looks like you could buy DE blades there in single packs. They carry T&H, Proraso and DR Harris lines; I think they carry GF Trumpers too.

Vasco does carry T&H, Proraso, D.R. Harris and GFT but agreed, crazy expensive! They have some German shave cream for $3-$4...

I think there is a place called Turkish World Market which sells supplies out of Turkey/the East - I heard that you could pick up Arko by the box there.

That's right, Marché Istanbul is the place

I am in Quebec CITY :) (but i'm not a separatist though)

I do not know of any place here which would offer old fashioned straight razor shaves. As for shaving gear, you'd be better ordering off internet really, not many sotres around here that would sell DE razors, or DE blades. You might find straight razors in a few places though.

You'll probably have better options in Montreal ;)

Other than the lack of shaving stores, Quebec city is one heck of a nice place to visit :)

Proraso green and white is available pretty much every where, and I have recently went into the jean ceatou on St Catherine and St Mathieu down town and they had the red in stock. Other than that I have not really found any other creams or soaps.

Vescio does have a decent selection, but like as others have mentioned it is totally over priced. You could order one item online and I think it would still be cheaper with shipping.

I don't know about the quality of the shave, but there is a really cool old barber shop on St Viateur street between Parc and St Laurent called Tommy's barber shop. Tommy has been there for a very long time, and he does a good job with the razor cleaning up after a hair cut. Plus you can get a bagel at St Viateur bagels on the way.

the Flea market at st michel is well worth exploring. I have made some great scores there.

I commented in the other thread the gent posted about expensive Proraso but just about every pharmacy sells green and white Proraso and either aftershave or pre shave stuff and is on sale often. Vasco actually had good prices on Proraso tubs and creams and also has red and blue. And the Spanish grocery store by Schwartz's has Floid aftershave. If you need a haircut head over to Montreal barbershop on the north side not too far from Olympic stadium, they also do straight razor shaves. Go to The Keg for dinner and Bier Markt for beers and dress warm LOL

Headed to Winter Carnival in Quebec tomorrow from central Maine. Was hoping to find a nice shop somewhere inside the walls but looks like I'll go without.

That's OK, we always love a trip to Quebec, winter or summer. The great food and beautiful women make up for the lack of shave shops.

Just rebooting this thread tonsee if there are any Montrealers with updated suggestions or recommendations?! Any new ideas for spots in Mtl are appreciated! Thanks!

Marche Milano on St Laurent in little Italy carries the entire Proraso line for cheaper. Also there a Spanish groceries on St Laurent near Duluth that carries Floid . All in Montreal.
