Monsavon Bol à Raser

Just tried this soap this morning!:thumbup1::thumbup1:

Bought this from fellow forumite and sandgroper Townyj - thanks mate!!!

I loaded by Rooney 1/2 finest quite heavily (well normal that I do for MWF or other triple milled Tallow soaps. I used the tablespoon of presoak juice from the top of the soap to my scuttle and whipped up a storm - Wow this stuff is super easy to lather, I didn't add anymore water and this egg-white lather just spilled over the scuttle and up my hand - way more soap than I needed.

I found this to be a great little soap, not as good as my Vintage and triple milled tallow soaps but far far better than I had thought.

If we say that Pens EF is a 10 for performance in all aspects I would rate this as a 7.5. I would easily pay more for this soap and keep it in my rotation.

Well my first french soap and I am impressed!

Cheers

Jase

I would agree with your assessment, Jase. A fine, fine soap worthy of any soap collection and a great performer! :thumbup1:

I have one on the way already...

I've got a bowl of the Monsavon and, while I think its a good product for the price, I think the tallow Pens, AOS, Tabac, Irish Moos, Speick and Palmolive stick are all better by a reasonable margin.

In terms of French soaps, I think the Pre de Provance and Provance Sante are much better products.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade or suggest that the Monsavon isn't a decent product, its just not a product I think folks should spend big $$ on - now if you happen to be in France or know someone who's going to be, its definitely worth trying to pick a bowl up at the $5 or so it costs in most French department stores.

Personally I think you gentlemen understate how good this soap is! I think that it's not just a great soap for the price, but a great soap. I payed $10 for mine which, when you think about it puts it in line with some much more expensive soaps per shave given that it is a soft soap, and most other tallow soaps are milled.

I like it, but it goes fast. I do about as well with P.160 Duro and it comes to much less per shave.

I do like the performance of this soap, but there are a lot better though and even veggie soaps.
But don't get me started of the scent. I know, to each his own etc, but this one really really smells like a urinal puck.

I think its great for the price. I was in on the group buy, and mind you I wouldnt pay more than 10 dollars a tub for the stuff.

Cookie_Junkie sent us a bunch of them for $10 shipped a few months ago. A truly heroic effort on his part for which we were grateful!

This is a good thread.

I think a 7.5 rating is spot on. it's a fun soap to have in the den, but i certainly don't think it outperforms some of the top tier soaps **Gold Dachs**, but the scent is unique and lovely and i like the packaging.

Isaac, you've been using it a lot? how is the lather on the second pass? it seems like it's significantly thinner for me on the second and third passes which is were it loses points IMHO.
