Modern Vs. Vintage

(I was going to title this New vs. NEW, but decided against it )

So, I have been in the DE game only a few weeks, and have spent most of that time with vintage Gillettes. I have enjoyed the process, dealt with the learning curve, and parted way with money on creams and balms. I was under the impression that the few makes of modern razors are primarily there because not everyone can find/trust a vintage razor, and if there is a market for something, it will be made. Basically, I did not see the reason to seek out a brand-new razor when I had a nice selection of classic ones.

Then the other day I ran across a Merkur 12c in a local shop and decided to just heft it for a bit. The initial interest was based on A) hearing so much good stuff about them, and seeing enough Merkur vs. Gillette discussions that I was finally convinced there had to be a substantial difference and B) the proximity of the razor to a Gillette Super Speed in the same case. I was pretty astounded by the size difference. As soon as I held it, I knew that I had been missing out on something. Not only was it MUCH heavier than any of the four razors I had (SS, NEW, tech, and Super Adjustable) but it was wider, longer, fuller, and other things that aren't even euphemisms.

After two shaves with this razor (yeah, obviously I bought it, it is in my nature to want to get rid of any money I come by as soon as possible) I can temporarily place myself in the "Modern" camp. Yes, there is a definite charm and mojo to the vintage pieces I have (and don't), but at the same time I genuinely feel that Merkur has learned from and added to the design of the safety razor. So anyone out there on the fence about ponying up money on a new-fangled chunk of metal, I say go for it!

(Note: I have not had any experience with a long-handled anything by gillette, and I suppose I am not advocating a modern "Classic-styled" razor over the vintage pieces they emulate.)

Hey, thanks for posting this. The only things I've ever seen for DE razors are vintage. I had not idea about the heft, or size difference between the old Gillettes and Merkur(s). Also, thank you for planting the seed that I must absolutely, positively have a Merkur someday.

Get a 34c. If you don't like it I'll be amazed but you'll be able to sell it quickly

I think all the HD designs are great, but what attracted me to the 12c was the longer length, and the open comb. Also, I really like the barber pole end.

If you like a long handled and hefty razor, think about the Merkur 38C. It's that kind of tool that makes you go "What? Wow!" when you take it in your hand - not to mention the feeling of shaving with it. 112 grammes and still growing (at least in my mind).
Good luck

+1

The 38C is a hefty wonder. I have large hands and the size of this razor really feels comfortable for us ham-fisted wetshavers.

its nice to live in both worlds
I love the heft of the 38 C but somedays I want the mild shave of a 40 S/S or maybe enjoy the red tip.
I am considering getting a Merkur slant barberpole as my next razor purchase :001_smile

My first safety razors (in order) were the Merkur Futur and the Merkur 38C. I have big hands and loved the heft of the razors, but in all honestly, once I started shaving with Vintage Gillettes (mainly Slim, but others also), I haven't looked back. I sold the 38C and haven't used the Futur in months. The shave to me is a lot smoother. That's just me though. Happy Shaving

I think it's not good to be an ideologue about these things. I have used both with great results, and I currently like my 34c best. I also prefer the modern, industrial look but really, it's the razor itself and not its date of issue that's important.

I agree. I would not support choosing one razor based on anything but personal experience. I WOULD recommend that everyone give a Merkur at least a shot.

I'm not so sure about Merkur being 'modern'. Isn't the HD a design from the early 1930s? I seem to remember something like that, but I could be wrong.

I think the two-piece and mechanism is a design copy, but I do not know about the weight/materials/etc. I would be interested if anyone more knowledgeable than myself could elaborate. Perhaps "modern," at least as far the HD design goes, is a tricky term. Although, as far as the classic definition of "Modern" in regards to art or literature goes, the HD is VERY modern (in that it encapsulates the traditional/essential elements of design and materials without excess). Maybe a better term would be "contemporary," and still even clearer than saying "Contemporary Design," would be "Contemporary Manufacturers."

You should then try a Hoffritz...

Love my Merkurs, but am not ruling out vintage at this point.

Think: "Merkur + Gillette," and not "Merkur v. Gillette."

BatNastard, you hit the nail straight on!
That said, both new and vintage razors work for me as long as they are in the same league: 34C, 38C, Red Tip, New, and HD Rocket do the job just fine.
Kind regards

of course, ALL Gillettes are vintage, aren't they? in that they are not produced any more, at least 30 years old... (I guess I am personally very very vintage...).

Merkurs are produced today (for better or worse) - and you can have them NEW (as in "new-from-the-manufacturer,-unused-by-god-knows-what-skeevy-retrobate-ish-previous-owner[s!]-who-likely-died-from-cooties-that-may-or-may-not-still-be-on-this-razor-no-matter-how-I've-tried-to-disinfect-it") and I'm sure that's important for many.

I think I'm gonna try me some VINTAGE Merkurs! (a "new" one on the way from Thirdeye).

Interesting thread....
