Modern May, 2023

I shaved a fortune
Modern May shave #14 (rated 9.8/10) using:
  • Razor: Gold Fatip Lo Storto OC
  • Blade: 1967 L3 English Gillette Super Silver (15)
  • Brush: Semogue Owner’s Club Mistura Taj (my favorite)
  • Pre-shave: Noxzema
  • Soap: Arko baby! (excellent)
  • Post shave: Thayer's Witch Hazel followed by Old Spice Swagger splash (my wife’s favorite)
View attachment 1661173The amazing Super Silver blade mellowed as it is on its 15th shave seemed the perfect match for the FOCS, which I had only used once before. My first use of the FOCS scared me a little if I'm honest. Under my nose is the scariest part because the FOCS feels like it exposes more blade at the corners, which is the part of the blade I use to get the whiskers close to my nostrils. This morning, I took extra care and got a very smooth and close shave in two passes WTG/ATG with minor touch ups.

My wife really likes the Old Spice Swagger scent, so I pulled it this morning for our wedding anniversary 👍.

Shave -- May 27, 2023.JPG

Prep: Face wash with Noxzema
Blade: Topaz Platinum
Razor: Blackbird Ti on a Rocca handle
Brush: Vie-Long 21mm horse hair
Soap: Canada Shave Soap
Aftershave: Stirling's Deep Blue Sea

I have been testing blades for the past two months, always using the Canada Shave Soap. I weighed the tub when I started. Today, after 30 shaves I weighed it again ... and I've only used a mere 9.3 grams of soap. The arithmetic works out to .31 grams per shave. Wow, at this rate (shaving every other day, on average) it will take me three years to finish the tub.

As for blades, today's Topaz blade is about the cheapest on the market, yet I was impressed with the smoothness. On the other hand, the Blackbird Ti will just chomp down on any blade and still deliver a fine shave. So there's that. Cheers to all, and happy shaving.

Evening!

27th day of May

Razor: Tatara Masamune
Blade: Permasharp (1)
Soap: AOS Sandalwood
Brush: Razorock Big Bruce
Aftershave: DR Harris Arlington
Post: Aveeno moisturizer

Nice shave today! While I like these blades, they are not my favorite in this razor. I think it's pretty much made for Feathers. Overall, still quite good. Cheers

Aftershave: Ulm Nom
Post-shave: hot shower
Post-shave: mentholated Equate moisturizer

Stubble grew back really quick from this morning’s shave with the new technique. And razor was felt until sunburn was nice enough to intervene. So I changed out the Schick with a Feather I had previously put back in its dispenser and I went back to hovering like I learned from many others at B&B.

A third of the way into my rediscovering hovering, I sliced open a mole. It was just outside where some whiskers lurked and was a totally random casualty. The rest of shave went on with more caution. Anywhere whiskers wanted to snag the edge, I asked myself “can I go lighter?“ and often could.

Despite impressing myself, my aftershave was a bit snarky. I know it’s because some of my “light” touch wasn’t lighter, but I tell myself it’s because my next batch of grain alcohol and menthol crystals will be a higher proof.

Notes to these shaves:

Another top tier shave with the Athena. Maybe faintly less than yesterday, but there was also less stubble to deal with than yesterday. The blade continues to perform so I will grant its 20 shave as well and we’ll see what tomorrow brings after that.

Enjoy your shave!

Slow and Steady. I think one other time before I felt like I was shaving with a shavette. Though I've never used a shavette before. I just feel like this is what it would feel like.

Ultra efficient with all blade feel. So, very aggressive. I got a weeper on the neck and a weeper on the head. But boy did it shave. Glossy smooth marble baby bottom skin. No touch ups required.
