Misleading article on Safety Razors in Men's Journal

Have any of you guys read this:
http://www.mensjournal.com/health-f...-safety-razor-saves-money-on-shaving-20131028

The definition of why a DE is different to a SE is incorrect, as is the part in 'What we don't Like'

'You have to use the badger shaving brush to apply the shave cream or the shave isn't as smooth. This means a little more time, not to mention pomp and circumstance, when all we want to do is get rid of our five-o'-clock shadow.'

Absolute rubbish, there was no means to comment or I would have done!

:lol:I'm reading it right now, how did you decide to keep reading after that first paragraph so horribly screws up the definition of a DE:lol:

This article included, I feel like any exposure is good exposure. It's just a shame that these websites are willing to publish articles that are so riddled with inconsistencies.

They got fed a bill of goods by whoever is selling the pictured razor. Some high priced merchant saw a way to get free advertising and put out less than all of the story. Between that and the reporter clearly not understanding the subject matter, the article does a poor job of representing traditional shaving.

The "journalist" totally misses out on vintage razors as being a great way to find a bargain. If you really want to save money, it is pretty easy to do with an inexpensive NEW, SS or TECH for about $15 and a $15 boar brush. If you are really on a tight budget get a 1912 for about $7.50 or a Feather Weight for less than $5.00. Yeah, I know I'm preaching to the choir.

This article still assumes that DE shavers don't enjoy shaving. That it's just something that has to be done. I didn't enjoy shaving with a cartridge and goop. But now part of the most enjoyable aspect of wet shaving is the lathering and massaging of your face with a well made badger brush. That's not a chore! That's a luxury!

And yes the cost saving benefits are great, but that's not the main reason I use a DE. It's similar to advertising a Tesla car simply because you save so much money on gas! Ignoring the performance, the luxury, and the enjoyment it brings. I enjoy the fact that I can get a barbershop-like shave each and every morning. This article completely missed the mark.

You have to keep in mind that these articles are geared toward selling new products that will make money for manufacturers/advertisers. Touting vintage gear does not accomplish that. Whatever you get in the way of information
is just a means to that end.

+1

I'm new to all this. And shaving every morning, which I never did before, takes longer. But it's worth it. I feel better about myself and I look better. Plus I smell great. :001_tt2:

I wetshaved all my life, and my shave takes less long than my shower.

I don't buy the "takes longer" argument, personally.

If this article was a marketing ploy using the editor as a medium, it follows that quite a few vendors got involved :001_tongu

I agree that the editor doesn't have a clue (who does? - we're still a minority), but by all accounts, articles like that bring some percentage of traffic here to get the real story.

I'm of the thinking that a DE Shaving resurgence is slowly occurring. If it takes on the mainstream, get ready for some interesting market changes, e.g., price increases for things we may now take for granted.

I agree it is just a non-paid advert.

They are probably confusing "takes longer" with it takes more care to DE shave versus cartridge razor shaving...I agree that this seems to be an article disguising ADVERtainment!
