Mint Soap

Good ladies and Gentlemen,

I was at a garlic festival a couple of weeks ago and there was a vendor there who hand/home made goat's mild soaps. The scents were all fantastic and I purchased a Vanilla Sandalwood and a Mint soaps. I asked about shaving with them and the vendor said he shaves with them all the time. Now I'm no lather deity, but I can certainly manage a good shave lather. My attempts at bowl lathering were feeble to say the least and when I went for a face lather it was disintegrating before I could get to the other side of my face. That being said, I relocated it to the shower so as not to waste it. The scent is so wonderful and it makes a good lather for the body in the shower.

So I have two questions on this subject:

1) Can any soap be made to shave quality lather and was I just an epic failure?

2) Can anyone recommend a Mint soap/cream that has a strong scent that is lasting and of good shave quality?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Kiss My Face has a shave creme, this lathers good and gives a good shave.

I got a sample of a mint soap from whipped dog...bald frog soap, I believe. You can probably contact larry andro for more info on this product. It is apparently made by a member of SRP.

Mike's Natural soaps makes a mint/rosemary soap that is one of my favorite soaps. Not the strongest scent, but it is smells good and performance is second to none. Mystic Water also makes a few different ones with mint, eucalyptus/spearamint, prospect creek and maestrale. Haven't tried any of these scents, but I have others soaps from her and I really like them too.

No. Only soaps specifically formulated for the purposes of shaving will produce a stable shave quality lather.

I suspect the person you bought it from is 100% clueless as to what makes for a good quality shaving soap, as most people who make their own soap are. The average soap maker seems to think that forming their bath soap into a round shape, and adding some clay is all that is required for shaving soap. These so called shaving soaps are typically a total disaster.

No amount of work is going to create a usable lather from this soap.

I would avoid any product that you haven't read good reviews about on B and B. There is the occasional diamond in the rough, but for every good shaving soap you find in the wild, there are probably 100 duds!! Odds are simply not in your favor!!

I figured as much. It was still a good shower soap and well worth the $2.50. Thank you for that. I feel better now.

Mama Bear has a couple with mint and her soaps are excellent in my opinion

I have tried her peppermint, as well as mint and rosemary Both smell amazing. I don't know if she makes them still. This was several years ago. But I have sure she has a few mint options.

Another vote for Mike's Mint-Rosemary. Shaved with a sample today, very very nice. The lather from his soaps is top notch too.

I have a peppermint soap from Suds and Sparkles soap on ebay and man it is MINTY

To further add, the Suds and Sparkles is Essential Oil scented, which in addition to giving it an authentic Peppermint smell, also gives it a huge menthol kick!!

It lathers well too, and at $5 (with free shipping) a puck it's really hard to go wrong!! There are over 200 fragrance choices available, and no premium charge for the Essential Oil scented soaps either!!

Here is the Ebay link where you can buy it:

I can't believe we have gotten this far along in this thread, with no one mentioning Queen Charlotte Soaps Vostok!!

Vostok is pure peppermint, with added menthol. The entire point of the product is to be as face freezing as possible. When I used the shaving cream (which is really a soft soap) about a year ago, it was so cold it nearly brought tears to my eyes!!

QCS is top tier, some of the best products on the market currently. :biggrin1:

This was what I was hoping for! I'm definitely glad I started this thread. Thank you everyone for your input!!!
