milling a shave stick into a ramekin

how many shave sticks would I need to mill to get a decent sized puck in a ramekin? 2? I love my palmolive shave stick but I tend to use it directly on my face since it isn't milled.

Today, I just milled two sticks of Palmolive into a one cup sized Pyrex bowl, with room to spare. You could probably fit three sticks, but it would be a tight fit.

cheers. I figure three might be the magic number. a stick of palmolive is about 50g and the small tub of cella is 150g, so all I need is a decent sized container and I should be good

ok, so mama bear soap containers hold about 4 oz, so I figure two shave sticks at 50g apiece would fall just under the 4 oz mark

I used a cheese grater. I think there is a tutorial somewhere on B&B. It's pretty simple.

Why do you insist on filling it? If it's not filling the whole container, that's fine, no? When it gets half used, are you gonna fill it again?

Good point. Leave some room so your lather doesn't splash everywhere. Those pretty wood bowls filled to the brim usually result in a scene reminiscent of an I Love Lucy episode, where they but too much detergent in the washing machine.

I use Palmolive shave sticks (50 g each). I grate 2 of them down into a wide and deep soup mug that I bought at Wal-Mart. This is the size of an AoS puck (95 g) and it sits nicely in the bottom of the mug. It fills the mug up only about 1/3 the way up the walls so it leaves plenty of room for the lather to stay contained.

I agree you wouldn't want to fill a container all the way up to the top since lather will just go all over the place. This is why I never understood the wooden shaving bowls like D.R. Harris or AoS.

I generally recommend against milling shave sticks into a bowl and prefer to use them in stick form. The exception, however, is milling the nubs of used sticks to use them up. A week ago, I milled < half a puck of Williams, two nubs of Arko, a nub of Speick, a nub of Wilkinson, and a nub of Euro Palmolive into a bowl. Stirred to blend the stick grindings and pressed it into a covered bowl. The milled soap was about the equal to two of the small sticks.

This 'brew' does work well; provides a big lather, and works well.

After having read your post and all the answers, I still don't get it. What is the point of milling a shave stick? If you "love" your Palmolive shave stick, why not just use it as it was intended - as a shave stick?

You said you "tend to use it directly" on your face. Isn't that how a shave stick is supposed to be used?

I don't like face lathering and usually do the lazy man's prep and that's using the shave stick on my face. yes, that's how they're intended to be used but I would rather use it in milled form. I said I tend to use the shave stick on my face because it isn't milled. now, if only palmolive only made their product in soap form

I just spent about 45 minutes searching, but could not find the shaving video I was looking for, but I have seen one where the barber (Indian,? Turkish?) lathered by picking up soap directly from a shave stick with his brush. Maybe there is a compromise out there for you.

I believe this is the one you were looking for. He lathers on the stick right at the beginning. I'm pretty sure this is in Turkey.

Yeah. That's the one. I should have just contacted you directly, instead of wasting so much time searching on line. Thanks.

No problem. I knew which one you were talking about when I read your post. That shaving stick the barber uses has a little bit of a weird shape, it kind of has a bulb at the end. I wonder if it was designed this way with a larger end so you could lather right on it easier?
