Miles Davis...my eyes have been opened

I heard some Miles Davis music this weekend, and I loved it...it is like I was in a trance. I have no idea what song I was listening to, but I just loved it

Anyone else here a big fan of his?

Miles coveres a lot of ground, if you pardon the pun. What were you listening too ?

Bitches Brew out takes are pretty cool if you like that album.

I don't know what I was listening to...I do know I am going to go hunting for CDs to burn to iTunes...

Miles is one of the best jazz artists of the 20th century, his career spanning from the end of the big band era all the way to jazz/rock and beyond. Amazing talent - he's one of the two or three best trumpet players in jazz. Check out "Kind of Blue" for a great introduction to his small group recordings, also "Sketches of Spain", but almost anything with his name on it is bound to be interesting. You have excellent taste!

Look for The Miles Davis Quintet, The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions. You can look up the provenance of these recordings for a lot of info. They include John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Unbelievable music.

His work in the late 50's to early 60's was superlative. Look at his albums: 'Round About Midnight, Miles Ahead, Milestones, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and Someday My Prince Will Come.

Miles Davis is great, isn't he? I don't know whick song you heard, but go out of your way to find a copy of Kind of Blue. There are many other excellent recordings by Miles Davis, but this is the one to start with. Kind of Blue is one of a few albums that transcends the genre. Even people who hate jazz usually enjoy it.

Not to derail the thread, but another jazz album everyone seems to love is Time Out, by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. If both of those pull you in, spend some time exploring jazz. I only got into jazz about four years ago - it is immensely rewarding.

Love Miles. Wanted to name my son after him, but got vetoed on that.

(Also wanted to name my second boy Vizzutti, but got vetoed again!)
(look up Vizzutti if you don't know)

Sketches of Spain also my fav of Miles. Concierto de Aranjuez is one of my absolute favorite melodies. I love the original, I love Miles cover, I also love the version from the movie "Brassed Off". (I make my band play this version whenever I can) Herb Alpert also recorded a cool version.

Count me in on the "Miles Lovefest". I can listen to just about any era of Miles and be just fine. Sketches is great. Porgy and Bess. On the Corner. Jack Johnson. Birth. Silent Way. One of the greats of 20th century music.

Another nod to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue." A definite desert island disk for me.
I also highly recommend "Bags Groove." It's got Sony Rollins, Milt Jackson,
Monk, and Horace Silver playing with him.

Here is a piece of Miles trivia. Did you know he guested on an episode of "Miami Vice" before he passed? Pretty cool huh?
