Metal Polish (Which one to buy)

Hi guys,

It seems like I am going down the path of RAD and I need to buy some polish. Found this 4oz. mothers on Amazon for $10. Any other suggestions or comments on the Mothers.

Flitz is what I use and have had good results with. Maas is meant to be more abrasive than Flitz, so I prefer to stay away from it. I’m guessing that Mother’s etc will be good, but since it is made for cars it may also be more abrasive and have a lingering odor (just guessing).

Edit: I found mine at HomeHardware and it looks like this

In typical B&B fashion, I have both MAAS and Flitz. They perform very, very similar in my opinion. They both get a thumbs up from me!

Flitz, Mothers and Autosol are all good polishes. If you have any gold wash, don't let these polishes get on it or they will take the gold wash off.

Try not to use anything that's abrasive. A gentle metal polish such as Peek or Solvol Autosol is excellent for razors.

Polish such as Brasso is very abrasive and should never be used on Gold or Silver. Nickel, Chrome and Rhodium will stand up to some abrasive polishing, but not forever.

Hope this helps.

Listen to the master. :thumbup1: I use Flitz and Maas quite often, but they are mildly abrasive and I have taken the plating off of a couple very rough razors in the past. Just don't go overboard with those two products and they're great on nickel and chrome.

Semichrome and Wenol are also non abrasive metal polishes.

Use what you can find locally. Call around to some hardware stores and you should find one of the products that have been recommended

I have Brasso and Mother's. Brasso does almost nothing so I don't understand the comments about it being the most abrasive? Mother's works well to clean up straight razor blades. I agree that most of these should not be used on Gold leaf or something that delicate.

I used Mother's on plated DE razors but it use it lightly.

Thanks everybody. I have a 1968 Gillette Superspeed to clean up and I wanted to get something. Think I will go with a small tube of MAAS to start with. I think it was $8 or something on AMAZON. I will let you all know how it goes.

It is coarse enough that you can polish for hours and not get a mirror finish with it. It scratches too deeply for that, which is why you seem to get no results from it, but trust me, it removes plating. It's either that, or you didn't shake it before use, so all the abrasives settled to the bottom.

Ive had great success with MASS here is proof http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...Before-and-After-pics-Unbeliveable?highlight= Before and after picks of a 1919 Bulldog Set.

Also i bought a drum of MASS 1.1 LBS as for me the tube only lastes a week :eek:/ and with many restoration jobs the tube went way to fast :eek:/ . A drum is pretty cheap on Ebay, and thats your best best if you plan on restoring a few )

im gonna have to look into getting the tub. im blowing through the tube. im getting tired of polishing. lol

Where I used to work we used Brasso to take hard anodising layer off certain parts!! would not use on a razor of any sort.
I use Autosol. Never tried the others though.
