What's new

Merkur Progress

Used one for the first time this morning set on 3.5 with a Super Iridium blade and the shave was just wow! I think that this guy may have just displaced my Fatboy adjustable. Now I have to decide if I want to send it off for the Mergress conversion.

I did the same thing with my Progress this a.m. The Polsilver SI blade is incredible in a progress. I liked it so much, I'm thinking about a Mergress. I, too, have replaced my Fatip with the Progress/Polsilver SI combination. I'll likely give my Fatip to a friend who wants one. This combination shaves far smoother and I feel closer than the Fatip--it's a lot more comfortable than the cheaply made Fatip.

Ha! I had the same shave with an SI this morning, I like mine set at 1 though.
Outstanding shave, the Gillette blues and yellows work well too. I'm thinking of getting 50 Polsilver SI's as they do last me about 5+ shaves.

I find the Polsilver SIs to be the smoothest blade from my experience and absolutely grand in the Progress. Today must have been Progress-Polsilver SI Day; and no one told us! Congrats to each of us on our collective find. For me this razor and blade are, at least for now, my #1 shave team. I found the Gillette blues and yellows to be a bit harsh, but no harshness in the Pol. SI blades. They simply cleave stubble. Enjoy your Progress razors and Polsilver SI blades, gentlemen.

I just received my Progress and was debating which blade to try it in first.
Looks like we have a winner :biggrin1: - thanks for the thread!

I love the Progress...and I am not a Merkur fan. I was going to convert to the Mergress, but I didn't want to part with it for two weeks. Then, I looked at that cute little retro plastic knob and thought, how cute, why bother. The Mergress knob lacks personality, although I admire Eric's skill and passion. I will remember this thread b/c I have not used my Polsilvers lately; great blade.

I also found the Astra SPP to work fine in the Progress, but it doesn't cut as efficiently as the Polsilver SI. Also, Astra SPPs take one shave before becoming smooth. It's as if one has to face-hone the blade with the first shave. I'd say Astra SPP is the best inexpensive blade I've used--but, Polsilver SI blades are in a class of thier own.

DEGuy - I'm originally from CT.

RitchieRich - I now live in KC Metro.

Used my Mergress by Eric this morning and yesterday. I rarely shave 2 days in a row. Usually have irritation on the second consecutive shave day - not today. Mergress set at a 2 for the first passed, then all the way down for ATG and buffing. The result - BBS, no irritation.

I have not tried the Polisilvers yet. I may get some from Bullgoose.

CT Pizza rules!
KC BBQ rules!

Cheers

Batman: Yes! CT pizza! Love it!
Polsilver SI blades turn the Progress/Mergress into an even more efficient razor--it really is incredible.
I doubt that you'll be disappointed.

I'm ordering some SI blades tomorrow or later tonight, whenever I get around to it.

@ Batman - Try Smokin' Gun's BBQ in NKC it's one of the best in town.

RitchieRich - thanks...been there, done it!!! Smokin Guns is definitely the best! Oklahoma Joe's (original spot in the gas station) a close second...

I dunno if I'd say the gas station was a close second, but it is my second favorite too. I think the best part of Smokin Guns is that my office is so very close I can go a few times a week, might have to go tomorrow now. The second is that my wife and I were on their Diners, Drive-in's, and Dives.

I love my Mergress with a med prep, but I've only used the Mergress - I didn't own it when it was a Progress.

* Go for the conversion if you really enjoy it and see yourself using it as your primary razor! They are great shavers.

Good thread Rich this razor gets overlooked too much by its big brother the Futur, the progress/mergress gives me that close long lasting shave only a few razors can!! A must try razor

Mergress in in my #1 spot after trying a lot of different razors. Funny thing is I almost purchased it for my first de but was advised against it. Its so great I just got a long handle mergress to keep it company

Guys, between yesterday and today I ran a little comparison using Polsilver Si and Astra SP blades. Here's what I found: Polsilver SI (PSI) cut are much sharper, a tad thinner, but can cause a bit of harshness, for me as I have sensitive skin and a tough beard, when going against the grain around my chin and upper lip; Astra SP blades cut great and are not harsh against my skin when used day after day. However, there's no question that PSIs are the more efficient of the two, but there is a slight cost when using the blade, even in a mild razor. Your findings may differ from mine. I will continue to use PSI blades, but not every day, perhaps every third day so I don't irritate my skin, I shave daily. PSI blades would pose no problem re harshness if one did not shave daily. Just thought I'd pass one one guy's opinion. Have a good one.
