Merkur progress vs mergress

I'm looking to get a progress or mergress adjustable. My question is: does the mergress upgrade really make much difference? Is the shave any better? I just want to know if the extra $$ is worth it. I have no problem spending the money I just want some input from folks that have used these razors. Thanks

It seems some folks thought the early Progress needed some help in making adjustments, those have the dots between the numbers, lately however they come with notches (l) between the numbers.

I have one with notches and have had no issues.

IMO no its not worth it to "upgrade" the knob, I like it as is.

Look at what Cooncat Bob did a few years ago, again this was certainly not needed but it was his time.

Again I would never have done this, but to each his own.

Great Question Phil i look forward to the respones, from reading Mer's thread i read he calibrates the settings as in they are off new out of box?

I own a progress and it's pretty much my go to. The mergress looks nice but I can't see how the knob could change the shave.

The adjustment is purely a reference point, it really doesn't matter where it starts at. I don't really understand the calibration thing, you start low and work up till you find your sweet spot or spots.

I like my progress the way it is, the weight, balance, and the way it shaves, I also like the plastic knob, it looks retro and suits it.

three-tu-tu, three-tu-tu
I only have the Mergress - which is a wonderful razor. One of the main determining factors was the improvement in the adjustment of the razor. I like the matching knob, but I love that the razor is better tuned.

the calibration that Eric does to the Mergress is evident between both of the razors.

+1. It´s like night and day. The calibrating that Eric does does make a big difference. But reading mhdena´s comment I can´t remember if the 3 Progresses I got theee or four years ago were from the "old line". (I have none left). Mind you the Mergress is a HEAVY beast and mine was not even the long version. In retrospect I eventually thought it was too heavy for my liking in the long run and sold it.

That seems to be a Futur head, not a Progress

Love my Mergress. And now I've got a Vision 2000. Interesting to compare. Haven't established a clear preference yet. And then there's my Futur . . .

Can i order the parts for a mergeress and asamble it my self

Yeah but then you not only don't have a guarantee on the workmanship, you've voided the warranty on the Progress.

I would love to get a long handled Progress with the XL Mergress knob on it. What a beast that'd be!

I had a Progress, used it for a while, and then sent it off for the Mergress upgrade with the long knob. I don't think the difference between the two razors is strictly cosmetic. The Mergress shaves much better (IMO) and I think it's because the balance of the razor is much better now.

The Progress with the plastic knob is very head heavy, which I don't really enjoy. With the long metal knob the razor is much better balanced, for my taste, anyway. So I much prefer the Mergress.
