I just did this. Mine is a long handled metal knob progress. I used no pressure and it worked great. Now I'll only use the 10 setting on the progress. I suggest if you have a progress that you give it a try.

No, thank you. If I need that aggressive of a razor, I switch over to my 39C.
My Pure-gress rarely sees higher than a 3.5, and my Futur(s) almost never go higher than 4.5, no matter which blade I have loaded.
My new theory about adjustables is to multiply how many days since my last shave by a factor of 1.5 ... it seems to work out rather well for me, but needless to say, YMMV.
I have only used it with Merkurs ... I see no reason why it wouldn't be equally effective with a Gillette adjustable. This is very interesting, I'll have to try it out. Does this theory of yours work with both Gillette and Merkur adjustables?

Keep in mind, you'll need to find your own multiplier, since Gillettes range from 1 to 9, unlike the Progress which goes 1 to 5 ... also, take into account the coarseness of your beard, and how fast it grows.
My theory is more art than science ... and I've only been using it a couple of weeks now. But I figure that the mid-point on an adjustable scale is equivalent to about a 2-day stubble. So that would be a 3 on Progress, but a 5 on Gillette.
If my multiplier goes past halfway on the scale, I switch to using a Sledgehammer Slant, which is at its best with 3+ days of stubble. If you don't have a Slant, then you can run your adjustable wide open, but I wouldn't "overclock" it and go past the top setting as designed by the manufacturer.
