Merkur HD 34C or Parker 22R?

I haven't tried the 22R, but highly recommend the 34C. It is a great shaver, particularly if you are new to DE shaving.

I don't know the Merkur, but the 22R was my first DE shaver. Despite negative comments from many people around here who have never tried one, it's actually a nice starter razor. Not the sturdiest thing in the entire world, but it consistently gave me DFS shaves and I never had any problems with it. I also prefer the TTO system for installing blades. There are quality control issues with certain Parkers, but I've heard similar comments about Merkurs as well. The only reason I gave up the Parker was because folks here convinced me to 'upgrade' to my collection of vintage Fatboys and Slims.

If you're interested in the Parker, I'd sell you mine, which is excellent condition, for cheap. But, if I were giving you objective advice, I'd recommend that you spend your $40 budget on a vintage Fat Boy or Slim or a Superspeed instead.

Merkur 34C and no issues changing blades. Gives great shaves with little fuss. On the other hand Parker is hit or mis. The 22R is a gunmetal finish and is put on the base metal very thinly. The 34C is chromed.

The Merkur 34C is an outstanding razor. Highly recommended.

+1

Shaved with mine this morning.
As it was recommended here, it was the 1st one I purchased.
It's still in rotation.
If you told me I could only have one DE I could be happy with a 34C.

The Merkur, anytime, anyplace, for any reason. Its just a much better razor. :thumbup1:

1+++++++++++

Parker is a great starter razor -if you want to turn a newb away from DE shaving.

No offense to those that have bought a parker that wasn’t defective (Your happy with it ,You like it ) God bless You.The problem is that there have been many posts from people who HAVE BOUGHT PARKERS and received a VERY DEFECTIVE FACE SHREDDER. Myself included.
I have no problem if some one wants to PIF someone a razor ( that they shaved with) that they can verify that it is mechanically sound. But recommending one to a beginner is problematic. A newb wont be able to look at the razor and notice that the safety bar is useless, is bent. The blade doesn’t bend at all to make an angle one could actually shave with, etc.etc.etc.

IMO. A company with such poor quality control is not a good recomendation for a begginer.

Like many others, I haven't tried the Parker but my Merkur is a pleasure to use every single time I pick it up. It's aggressive enough to cut right through my barbed wire beard.

The 22R was my first DE razor and the Merkur slant arrived the next day - have kept moving forward, the guiltless Parker sits forgotten in a drawer:mellow:

I shave with the parker 22r, its a great razor, its perfect for the beginner. Some say its an aggressive razor; i have no clue if it is, because its all i have ever used. I have cut myself only once and that was my fault I applied pressure and j hooked into my lip, not a bad cut though. I have also recieved razor burn when going atg. have yet to try atg again.
