Merkur Futur settings

Bought this razor about 2 weeks ago and the small instruction guide that comes with it says

"Setting of the individual space between blade & edge to straighten skin by memory of the numbers 1 - 6"

At present I have been using it on 1 then shaving off some fuzz, then relathering and dialling upto 2 for my second and final pass.

I just wondered how you lot tackle passes and with what number settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are a number of threads on this, but basically there is no right answer. Each person is different. For me, it's 4.5, but quite a few people set it in the 2-3 range.

First two passes at above 6. Against the grain at 3.5, then touch ups at around 2+

Even with the feather I tried I still cranked it up to 6.5 on the first two passes. It was fine.

Pretty much varies per person. Seems the general rule of thumb, with any safety razor, the higher levels are use to take out the heavy growth. After that, dial down when doing the second pass and against the grain.

My scenario, if I get long stubble, I set my Futur around 2-3. I go against the grain. After that, I go down to 1.

If I am on a consecutive shave streak, I'll keep the setting at 1. Love the flexibility of these devices

Its an individual thing.

Used to use 2.5 but ive sense gone to 6.5, works way better!!!

Give it a try, may surprise you.

+1 on its an individual thing. On any given day I will shave with a Slant, Futur, Slim, Schick, or new acquisition (five slots in my razor holder). The fact that my Futur is set at 2 or my slim is set at 6 has no relationship to each other any more than the slant, which is not adjustable, does to those razors. Comfort and enjoyment are my rule and guide with any razor, YMMV.

I have a new theory about adjustable razors ... I set the dial to the number of days its been since my last shave. This has been working quite well with my Pure-gress, haven't yet tried it with my Futur(s). I generally use Astra-SP in both.

The theory is that you need a smaller blade gap for daily shaving, and a wider, more aggressive gap to tackle several days of stubble.

YMMV, of course, and you might find the need for a multiplier depending on your beard, skin sensitivity, and razor model. You might try a setting of 1.5 for a 1 day shave, 3 for a 2 day shave, 4.5 for a 3 day shave, etc.

I know these threads often sink without trace, but I just wanted to say cheers!

Had the Futur for about 1 month now and have been achieving consistently good shaves, time after time.

Not the cheapest razor, but it is a damn fine razor.

I now know I made the right decision to buy this and not the Progress. The weight is comforting.

As for all the "slippery" reviews, do not listen to them and if you are reading this and considering buying one, do it! You will not be disappointed. I have used it many times this past month, with a warm lather of Truefitt & Hill, Taylors, Proraso etc. all over my hands and it has never slipped.

For me it was quite an upgrade in terms of quality & price, from £3.50 for the Boots razor I had been using for around 2 years jumping upto £45 for the Futur.

Heres to many more great years shaving with this beast!
