Merkur Futur review

I recently recieved a Futor as part as the contributors razor loan program and have been shaving with it for a few days. The first time i tried it i used a Shark blade and got a really bad shave, and horrible razor burn on my neck. The last two shaves have been with a feather and have been really great. Both were two pass shaves with the razor set to 1. great shaving razor, but i wish it had a more slip resistant handle. I felt like i had to grip it pretty hard to make sure it didnt slide out of my hand.

Pretty impressed with the razor, and it is definetly aggressive. the razor set at 1 seems to have a much bigger blade gap than my fatboy at 9! maybe i will work my way up to higher settings, not sure what people use, but i couldnt imagine going up to 5 or so on it.

The Futur is a great razor. A knurled handle would really be the icing on the cake. I think the same goes for the Progress.

Been loving mine since I got it. I also found that I no longer felt the need for Feathers to get a close shave. I still throw one in every so often, but I get great results with less expensive blades.

I love mine and have so far settled on a setting of 2.5 for my very slow growing beard. I saw a dude on youtube take a rubber grip from a pen and put it on his handle. This would be a great idea for an ingenious person to make a similar product he or she could sell for $5.

Ok, quick update after using the Futor for a few weeks. First off, i have found that i am able to get a great shave with this razor...however, it does take a little more concentration and focus for me than my other razors. Currently i use vintage gillettes - President, NEW, and New Standard. I get about the same results with all of these razors, however the vintage gillettes are just easier to use and more consistent. I can really shave my face very quickly with them and hardly ever get razor burn.

I have always done things based on the saying of why work harder when you can work smarter. To me, and others i am sure would disagree, shaving is not some out of body / zenlike experience. its just removing hair that has grown. There are a number of ways to do it. I switched to DE and a straight because the results are better with no irritation. That doesnt mean i want to spend 20 minutes in the bathroom shaving and doing 4 passes to get the perfect shave...that will quickly disappear as the hair grows back.

I appreciate the opportunity to try out the Futor and very thankful to Vlad for organizing the pass around. This is the second Merkur product i have tried, and have tried many others EJs, etc. For me, i am a vintage Gillette guy.

I have rediscovered by Futur after having sidelined it for a few years. I think I needed to have my technique develop before I could appreciate the aggressiveness of the Futur. It will never be my favorite, but it is definitely back in the rotation.

I have been trying a couple different razors..stated with a Parker (it was ok for the novice safety razor user) then went to a 1965 Gillette Slim Adjustable. Loved that one using Art of Shaving Shave Cream, AOS Pre-Shave Oil and hand made lotion for after the shave. All was pretty good until I got my Merkur Futur! Firstly, I mostly use Bluebird or Shark blades...I used a Derby. Then I ordered some Urth Shave Formula. I used a pre-shave lotion and the Urth. Started out with a setting at 1.5. I have extremely sensitive skin so I dialed back to 1.0. I easily got the best shave in my life! I did knick myself a couple of times but I was using new blades and getting use to the Futur...Gotta say that it was an amazing shave! I'm all about aftercare as well and that makes all the difference in the world. I agree with you...I cannot imagine setting the dial to 5 or 6. The shave I received at 1.0 was incredible!

After a couple of years, I've figured out that 2.5 works just fine for me. I get a great shave with no irritation.
