What's new

Merkur blades.

I am new to DE shaving and bought a pretty extensive variety pack. I've reached the Merkur blades and all I can say is, wow, what a mediocre blade. I must say that I didn't experience any burn on my neck, as I have with every other blade. But other than that, I'm surprised at how much work it takes with these blades to get a close shave! Maybe that's the point? Merkur, maybe, decided to make a very mild blade so as to make it all "safer?" I'm just surprised at how expensive these blades are, and that they are a German manufacture, considering how they work.

Anyone have a different or competing viewpoint? :001_huh:

I have to agree with you. I'm no expert at DE shaving but I've tried to use Merkur blades a few times and was not getting good shaves. I'm sure an experienced shaver can use pretty much any blade, but I really found the Merkur blades tugging at my beard.

I've settled on Astra SPs, Gillette 7 O'Clock Blacks and Silver Blues.

The Merkur was my first blade and it almost made me give up DE shaving. But then I tried a Feather blade and the rest is history.

Same story...never cut myself with a Merkur, but I never got a good shave either. It wasn't until I used a Derby that I finally said to myself "So, this is what this is all about..."

Count me in as another Merkur hater. I know we always say YMMV when it comes to blades, but I don't think I have heard of anyone saying they like Merkurs. Great razors, terrible blades.

These blades should not be manufactured/sold ... they probably turn more people away from wet-shaving than any other factor ... almost did with me!

The Merkur blade came with the first DE razor that I ever purchased, the 34 HD. I prepped my beard really well but it really dragged across my face. I switched blades on the next shave. I'm tempted to try a Merkur blade again (one year later) to confirm it's not my technique...

+1.......I really don't like Merkur blades...and they cost top dollar (go figure)?:sneaky2:

My Mergress came with a Merkur and knowing how poor they shave I almost tossed it but thought why not. I used it for one shave. two passes. Then tossed it and went for a Gillette Black.

They are definitely blades I won't buy. I got 5 blades as courtesy when I bought a new soap. Maybe they couldn't sell them...

Granted, I'm not quite 6 weeks into the whole DE shaving thing, but I thought the Merkurs were fine. I'm actually on my first blade that's not a Merkur, and it does about the same job. When I started DE shaving, after a couple of weeks of working on technique, my wife commented several times on how much smoother my face was, and how it was taking longer for me to get "all sandpapery." I have picked up several blade samplers in the last month to get a variety of blades and most of them included Merkurs. I PIFed a package of them to a buddy that's wanting to try out DE shaving, but it was because I thought they had done ok for me. I've gotten what I would consider several DFSs from the Merkurs.

Now that I'm on to some of the other blades and don't really have much with which to compare, from what I'm reading above, I guess I should really be looking forward to the super BBS shaves I'll be getting with some of the other blades. But, then again, I completely understand that with blades and razors and creams and aftershaves it's definitely YMMV. With that said, I won't be buying any Merkurs unless they're the only choice because of their price point as compared to almost every other blade I've seen out there.

The first blade that I'm trying out that's not a Merkur is a Shark SS. To me it seems to be an ok blade too, but from what I've read it's also another one that nobody seems to cotton to.

--snarf <---not a Merkur hater by any means

Merkurs are far from the worst. Try a 7AM Durablade and watch it skip and dance from follicle to follicle. A sharp blade that bounces around like it was on a trampoline. Took two swipes and tossed it.
