What's new

Merkur 42 1904 no grip on handle! Anyone else have this issue? Super Slippery.

I just did a test run on my new Merkur 42.. It gave a nice shave but the nickle plated handle seems to have zero grip and super slippery! Has anyone else had this issue or is it just me? :crying:

I've heard this before but I don't seem to have a problem with mine. Yes, it's more slippery than a Super Speed but one thing I always do is rinse any lather from my fingers before picking up my razors.

Welcome!

Japanese kamisori (straight razor with no scales) always have string wrapped around the handle. Easy to do, very effective.

PS -- and now I'm _really_ glad I got the "barley" handle on my EJ DE89.

The 1904 is actually chrome plated and one trick is to have some alum around and give it a little rub before you hold your razor. You can always rinse any cream or soap off your hands before shaving.

I'll have to give the alum a try thanks! I'm a new in DE world so I probably do have a little too much soap on my hands! I could always swap the handle from my Gillette Tech (fits perfect) but that just wouldn't be right!

I have two of these razors one OC the other CC. Now, one has a nickel plated handle, thats what it said on the delivery slip. The handle has a very slight yellowish tint. It's a simalar colour to a nickel replated Tech I have. I know this proves nothing and I'm by no way a plating expert. Ifboth are chrome what would make one appear with the yellowish tint? The other handle by the way, well that is definatley chrome, very shiny and strangley more slippery.

I believe the Merkur 1904 Classic is nickel plated in both OC and SB versions. Says so on most shopping sites and it certainly looks like nickel plating. Much more yellow than chrome like on 34C and EJ DE89. I have an OC 1904 Classic and I really love the look of it. The plating is superb and looks very good. Nicer than chrome, even, especially on this vintage replica. I did not find the handle to be slippery, but that's because I practice usual precautions like make sure hands are not soapy and I usually hold my pinky under the end of handles short enough for that (which this one is). I think it's one of the most beautiful new razors out there. OC is too mild for me, kind of like the Gillette Old type, which it's based on. Perhaps I need to try a shim in it. Great inexpensive razor otherwise.

I've only got the CC version and I put it next to fresh nickel replates and it's got the blue tint associated with chrome. When it's next to my Muhles and other Merkurs, it's the same color. I haven't seen the OC version but I'm curious to see comparison pics. Here's a shady pic from my den, I'll take some after work, but look at the FaTip (nickel version) compared to the 1904 on the side.

Perhaps Merkur did a run of these in chrome earlier. Or conversely, my razor is older and newer ones are chrome. Mine is definitely nickel and it's lovely that way.
